Computer Freezing.... Just wondering if anyone can help! My computer keeps locking up for no apparent reason. It seems as though it started after the installation of a few Windows Hotfixes, but its been doing this for quite some time now. It appears to crash mostly when I'm attempting to burn cds etc. but it has simply locked up when using Microsoft Word, or downloading. Any ideas at all what could be causing this problem and how on earth it can be fixed?
nah, you tend to get warning messages about that kind of thing Its more likely to be one of those hotfixes. I installed a particular hotfix onto my laptop (SP2 :fart: ) and that fucked up the entire machine. I've had similar experiences with the Microsoft "Malicious Software Removal tool" available through windows update.
PC is an AMD1800+, 256MB RAM running XP (SP1) Hotfixes installed include: KB823559, 828741, 833987, 834707, 835732, 840987, 841356, 841533, 842773, 873376, 887822 Q329048, 329390, 329441, 329834, 329170, 810577, 810833, 815021, 817606 If anyone has absolutely any ideas, I would really like to hear them...otherwise I have a feeling the machine won't make it through the night
Another thing thats just come to me is when I'm running checkdisk. It gets to the stage where its verifying the indexes, but it picks one file up everytime: Deleting Index entry COMMON~2.DAT in index $130 of file 16033. Any idea?
Right, I've had a look through your updates list and it looks fine Have you tried System Restore? (Start Menu, Programs, Accessories, System Tools). Try restoring it to the point before your updates were installed. Just my two pennies
Right, wasn't entirely sure when the hotfixes were installed, so simply picked the earliest system restore point. It went through the whole process of restoring files/settings etc. but then when it booted up, it just said that it couldn't be restored to that point This goes from bad to worse!
On a pc of that spec m8 ur not going to be able to run many processes at once, and one thing xp is very good at letting spyware take up alot of your CPU usage, and if you ctrl+alt+del when it locks up u will prob see that your cpu useage is sitting at 100%, run any spyware removers you have and also check your anti-virus, cos u if your running pccillin then there has been a problem with one of the updates causeing lockups like you have discribed but the newest update should sort that, its also worth seeing if you can get an update fo your writeing software, if your running a copied version of xp, or if all else fails, back up, format C: and start over good luck m8
AMD XP 1800 plus 256 ram is pretty good for a home machine... so it's not server level - but it's enough.
What a crock of shite , I've had XP running on an AMD K6-2 500 before and it wasn't slow. Manofscience is right - your machine's not bleeding edge but it's more than adequate for running XP. Hodge, try using a later restore point. If your restore settings have been left as default, it should create an automatic restore point after any new hardware or software is added to the system. Try the most recent point and work backwards. Don't try to remove the hotfixes, while you may be able to remove some, others can't be uninstalled. If this doesn't work, stick your windows XP cd in on boot, and use the Automated repair system (instructions HERE). That should work, (and it shouldn't wipe your work/music/etc) but I wouldn't do it unless you have no other choice. Hope you get it working
I've been having a bit of a play about and it looks as though the crashing has stopped.....however, another problem has arisen. It never rains but it pours! Anyway, my cd-rw, and dvd drives have er...disappeared? I've tried updating drivers etc...but the message I'm getting is Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) Any ideas from here?
Try 'removing' your dvd and cd drives from the device manager and then restarting the machine. It should auto-detect them on startup. If this doesn't work, run a full scandisk on your hard drive to make sure none of the driver files are corrupted
Nah, no joy there. I've tried uninstalling/updating the drivers for both, but I'm just getting a message saying that they're both the best for the job.
Hhmm... could be BIOS. When you first turn your machine on, go into the BIOS (it'll say something like Press F10 or Del or F2) then go to tghe option to 'Load Fail Safe Defaults' or something like that. Load them then save the settings. Reboot. Next, in hardware manager in windows, uninstall them and reboot. See if it picks them up again. You install any software recently like Alcohol 120%? some software create 'virtual' drives so u can mount Cds, DVds, stuff like that... try uninstalling ANY CDR/DVDR software... Or like Conway said, keep trying earlier System Retore. OR just after the BIOS screen, Press F8 - try the 'Last hardware settings that worked" see if that makes any difference
