    Comments on a new PC

Right then, gona be building a new machine to eventually replace my long-past-retirement dell that I got when I was in year 11.

    The spec:

    Processor: Core 2 Quad Q6600
    Mobo: Asus P5W DH link
    RAM: 4GB OCZ PC6400 DDR2 CL4 link
    Main HDD: 74gb Raptor
Second HDD: Western Digital 320GB IDE
GFX: 8800 of some sort up to £200 - open to suggestions
    Case: Antec 900 Gamer link
    PSU: 600 watt OCZ link

All in all, will be £800-£900

Ram and Mobo aren't set in stone - so open to suggestions there too!

I'll be rescuing the optical drives from my current PC as they are decent. Also the IDE drive is rescued too.

Going to run 64-bit Vista Business..because I can get this fully licensed for free, so doesn't seem worth buying Ultimate and I can't be arsed with a pirate OS.

I also plan to add another 74GB Raptor at a later date, and set them up in RAID0.

Not sure what to do about CPU cooler mind, I plan to overclock a bit but not shitloads.

    Any thoughts/advice?

    cheers :D

That's a good point - but....you'll get to that stage, and then you will think "oh well i might aswell wait for this one to come out" etc and it just takes forever

The next one up from the Q6600 is available now but its like £450 :/

Any suggestions for a specific GT? One of my mates reccomended the new ATI 3870 HD card link

I'm not sure though...I mean aren't lots of games optimized for nVidia cards?

I was going to go with Vista Business 64bit, but i've read lots of stuff about compatibility issues, and I don't like this drivers must be signed nonsense

    So probs XP 64bit!

    Defo the case to get.

As for GFX, defo get the GT. Don't ever get the GTX.. if the prices of them came down to within 10% extra compared with the GT then fine, as that would equal the performance difference. You could get 2 GT cards in SLI for the same price or less than the majority of the GTX versions and they've got excellent benchmark results. I haven't heard anyone recommend an ATI card in the past 4 months that I've been planning my new pc. The Inno3D card got a good write up.

Not sure about your HDD tho. U already got one? The Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 is the one I'm opting for and reviews said there wasn't much of a difference when using that and the Raptor.

    sound advice that

and since that case has incomprehensible ventilation, overheating wont be a problem. although the amount of energy required to power such a PC will be refelcted on ya lecky bill

lol, I should be able to neutralise it...i've started turning my TV and monitor off, instead of leaving it on standy!

cheers for the advice, I think 8800 is the way to go for sure.

I had the same thoughts about the HDD mind, could get a hell of a lot more space for less money with a Seagate 7200RPM...will probs just for for that tbh...in fact I could have 2 in a RAID0 for about the same price as a raptor. Do you have a link for that specific model?

I'd defo go for space over "speed" with the hdd's unless you really need that extra boost. I can't think of a situation that would justify me paying a premium price for a drive that is a bit faster with a much lower amount of storage space. Maybe your needs a different to mine though :p

As for the drive I mentioned - I'm currently looking at newer models cos I still haven't got around to buying my stuff yet. Probably best that you do the same :) www.komplett.co.uk is my favourite.

you will notice raptors are alot faster than a normal sata like even in raid 0, if you were some sort of hardcore gamer then the raptors would be better, if your not then just get a pair of WD's or barracudas in 0, or just one will do

Unless you have a big budget I can't see a reason why you'd want to go for the raptor. Surely if you're a hardcore gamer you'd prefer to have a lot more space (games will be massive within a couple of years). I personally have never experienced any problems with gaming that was down to the hard drive not being fast enough so I'd rather focus any 'spare' money I had on the gfx + memory etc..

    All personal opinion though :p

yeah, i read in PC gamer that games developers are predicting to be hitting 50gig storage space for games in 3 years or so

daftness, just pulling an old game out at random....

conflict desert storm 1: storage needed 500mb, 128mb ram needed

    how times change
