uninstall programs correctly, from either 'add/remove programs' or using their uninstaller. You can download clean up software that does the job too. I wouldn't have a go manually unless u know what you're doing. its a bit of a tricky one. Run defrag also.

Thanx m8. Somehow I knew you would post here:D
The reason behind this is that my lasses dad has gave me his pld computer and its better than mine but full of massive programs to do with Flying and fixing planes(thats his job).
The computer is running really slow because of these and I want rid of them.
If I use the Add/remove programs for these will it be ok?

it should do. Only problem is, sometimes afterwards you find it still runs a little slowly - cause you've removed so much from the Registry, it still slows it down. i think you can get registry optimisers. I'd flatten and re-install. A lovely fresh pc.

and what u saying like? i'm a geek? i'll fuck u up.

Not at all m8. YKTS with computers etc.
There are some files that I want to keep on there and I don't have the drivers for the cd copier. If I start a fresh, will it be hard to find the drivers?

not too difficult. could be a bit problematic. for example, if you need the modem drivers, but you've got to get on the net first... have the modem working... but u can't cause u need the drivers... ole catch 22. has it got a CDwriter? you don't need drivers for a CD writer - just some burning software. I'd get the writer working, save all the drivers for everything onto a CDR, back up as much as u want.

Finding drivers isn't too difficult, aslong as you know the manufacturer and model of the device. or at the very least, the chipset on the device. and the net, of course.

I generally do a fresh format and reinstall of windows evey 6 - 8 months. Keeps things nice and fast (and up to date thanks to Microsoft releasing a new version of windows or a service pack every few months  )

I done pretty much what MOS said.

While u've got the net workin just download the drivers you need for the devices you've got. I also thought it was a good idea to download some of the more useful tools like Winzip/WinRAR, windows media player and loadsa codecs.

Makes reinstallin a bit easier! :D

goto START>>>SEARCH>>>FILES/FOLDERS>>> then type *.tmp into the search title and search. Then delete ALL files if finds.

Also when in Internet Explorer goto TOOLS>>>INTERNET OPTIONS>>>TEMP INTERNET FILES then delete all offline files and then go to "Settings" and setup the amount of disk space to use to 60mb.

    This will help speed things.......

    i recommend getting window washer!

its great, gets rid off all things temporary, internet history, cookies etc

good thing is, you can select cookies to keep, eg. you can keep the promise cookies so it keeps you logged in, which is handy if you are a member on several sites!

    you can get that HERE

If you are reformatting i would recommend upgrading to Windows XP Professional, and all your drivers are reinstalled automatically, so you dont need to fanny on doing it yourself!
