    Cheap satnavs

I've briefly used a tomtom that cost about £400, and a much cheaper brand for a few ~100 mile routes in the UK, and I haven't really noticed much of a difference between them other than looks and maybe simplicity of use. Is there any reason why someone should buy a £400 satnav when they could get one for a 1/4 of the price?

I'm looking to buy one but if they're all prety much the same, I'm gonna go for the cheapest I can find!

Get yourself a tom tom one, you'll pay £100 at the most, unless your travelling abroad then they do everything you need

Well the £400+ one that I used was a TomTom.. I've also used one that cost about £50 and I couldn't see a difference as far as using it to get from A to B. I'm been reading reviews of ones that cost about £50 and people seem to be more than happy.. some say they've replaced their more expensive TomTom's/Garmins for these ones.. plus you can load them with TomTom v7 software. Was just wondering if anyone here had decided to go for the cheap option but regretted it for any reason..

Money is an issue as this is actually going to be a present for my mam and my student loan has almost withered away already :p I've used the satnav software on the N95 but it's less than sufficient for any prolonged use. II might just go for a cheap one and put tomtom software on it.. something like this:

    Gets good customer reviews.

the missus bought me a smartnav one from halfords for my birthday which works outside of UK also (handy when we were away, stops you getting flustered looking for the right turn offs ha).. think it was 120 quid and does the job, won't be amazing, but gets you where you want to go ok.

my more expensive tom tom is actually worse than my previous cheaper one. Takes longer to load and find the satellites and slower to react which made it harder in cities where you have no time. It does have speed cameras though which is vital with my points total and why I bought it

my mrs has a tomtom one and that's fine, think that works outside of the uk too. we've used it to navigate various locations this weekend and it's been decent, and they're sub-£100.
