Cd Recorders / Recording Into Pc's

This now is the 3rd external cd recorder that has fucked up in the time i've been mixing. have all been phillips and set me back about £200 a time.
I refuse from now on not to spend another penny on those disasters.

Usual faults> not reading discs, doing mixes - finalizing discs - then dont play, going to update half way through a recording, buying loads of different brands of discs etc.

Gonna start recording hopfully into my sisters laptop (as my comp is in other room of house)

1 thing tho, when a disc is finalising in a cd recorder is it effecting, making better the sound that is originally recording??

Or is it just basically making the disc compatible with other players???

Just sometimes i find that when finalised it sounds acctually better than it did through my cdjs.

Basically is there a decent program that is easy to use that will record a line in , in 192, 256, 320kbps etc.
But give the crystal sound i seemed to get from the phillips recorder.

    Many thanks, hutch

i would just record them to ya PC first mate, then burn them to disc. that would avoid the coin lost and means ya can twiddle about with it on soundforge/audicity before hand :)

    Cool, cheers lads :D

    will give soundforge a blast.

but still, is it just me that thinks finalising a cd makes it sound better.
or is it just me being totally retarded.

i would love to find out.....

It's the same quality mate - all "finalizing" is doing is closing the disc and making it readable, unless your external burner has some sort of processing on it.

When you record it with a PC you can do all sorts of clever stuff with programs like Audacity & Soundforge (compression, dynamics processing, not to mention editing if you make a mistake on a mix).

Plus, if your CD-writer fucks up in a PC, it's only around £25 for a branded one on ebuyer.

finalising just tells the disc what it is, like a header so it knows its a audio cd and will play in audio cd players... unfinalised audio cds can sill be read in pcs tho.

question: Are you using CDJ's and how do u connect, cable wise to the cd recorder?

    aye.
I have mine set up so that the sound output to the amp and speakers is in the booth output on the mixer, and the master output on the mixer goes into my laptop (formerly my cd recorder until it died)

On the Pioneer mixers you then have a booth monitor volume control and a master volume control on the mixer to control both the live sound and recording sound individually

CDJS have digital outs dont they?

Is Hutch using a digital cable into his CD recorder???

If he is and hes using a non-digital into his puuter this will expain why he hears a sound difference.

Really you sould be coming out of yr CDJs digitally and into yr PC digitally using a good soundcard. This gives as good as lossless transfer

Just out of curo is the Digital Out on the CDJ a Optical (little red light) or a Coxial

Cheers Conway and pike on the info about finalising, must have just been me that thought it sounded better:confused:

    Pike i have mk2 1000s and a djm 600.
all connected through basic phono cables (red & white) then to my amp. and recording is through my booth > to recorder.

Gonna nick my sis lappy tomorrow and install soundforge and start fresh on there..:D

i been recording since i was 15 on to these cd recorders and have never known any better lol, think its time to move on from those pieces of shite. Im sick to death of them

cheers all for your help

i got a nearly new cd recorder lying about somewhere boxed that i confescated of someone, shall i price it up for you?

you should be looking at going digitally out of yr cdjs ...its daft not doing so if they have the outputs it will make your mixs same as cd quality. a cable is less than a tenner

that wouldnt work unless he had a djm800 mixer as the 600 dosent have a digital out , the cdj's can link up to the 800 via coaxial then coaxial out from there to a cd recorder !!

Hutch, the difference in volume levels is probably due to the CD recorder or your master volume level.

With a PC using something like soundforge, it's piss easy to set up before you start off. The better programs show your levels before you start recording so you can adjust it as needed.

I find anywhere between -6dB and -3dB at the PC end is just right for me.

Have a look at the link below for a guide on how to set it all up.
