    McClaren eyes Carling Cup glory

Steve McClaren insisted there is no point Middlesbrough returning from Cardiff empty-handed after watching them reach the Carling Cup final.

Boro booked their showdown with Bolton at the Millennium Stadium on 29 February with a hard-fought 2-1 win in their fifth clash of the season with the Arsenal.

It is the fourth time they have reached a major final in the last seven years, but having returned empty-handed on each of the last three occasions, McClaren is determined that 2004 will be the year they end their long wait for a first-ever piece of silverware.

"Obviously, personally it would mean a lot me if we won it, but I think it's about winning,'' he said. "It's great getting there, but there's half a job done.

"For me, the most important thing is going there with the attitude that it's a nice occasion, but I've had nice occasions before. You've got to win them to make them even better.

"As a manager, obviously it ranks up there, but it will be even better if we go there and win it.

"They've been close many times before and just failed at the last hurdle. We have to make sure that we keep our feet on the ground and not say 'Oh, it's great to get there'.

"You can't think like that. It's an opportunity, like last night was an opportunity, for the players to make history.''

Boro took a 1-0 lead into the game from the first leg, but even a much-changed Arsenal side, in which new signing Jose Reyes was handed a first start, caused problems.

However, their cause was not helped by Martin Keown's 45th-minute dismissal for a professional foul on Massimo Maccarone, and when Bolo Zenden put the Teessiders in front, converting Gaizka Mendieta's slide-rule pass with 69 minutes gone, the Gunners were reeling.

Brazilian midfielder Edu gave the visitors hope eight minutes later with a close-range header, but Reyes' night ended on a sour note when he put through his own goal with five minutes remaining to ease Boro's passage into the final. :D

My support will depend on what Gibson decides to do about the 'illegal' transfer of Ziege from 'Boro to Liverpool. If he decides to take it further (which I think he is) I will be sticking up for Bolton I'm afraid!

    Good lad! :D

    And @ 'scouse' kyle...

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson has promised to vigorously pursue the club's legal case against Liverpool over the transfer of Christian Ziege.

In March 2002 Liverpool were fined £20,000 by a Premier League commission after being found guilty of making an illegal approach for Ziege.

But Boro want more compensation and are seeking up to £10m through the courts.

Gibson told the Sunday Mirror: "The club will not rest in its pursuit of the truth and for proper recompense.

"We lost a very, very prominent player, Christian Ziege, through illegal means.

"That happened two or three weeks before the start of the season.

"And when I say illegal means, that's not my verdict, that's the verdict of the Premier League.

"The Premier League found Liverpool guilty of illegal action in taking Christian Ziege to Liverpool at the expense of Middlesbrough.

"And that had a terrible effect at the club."

Middlesbrough are seeking £2m on top of the £5.5m they received for the German international, who is now at Spurs.

The club said it should receive the difference between the Liverpool's payment and Ziege's market value in 2000, which they argued was £7.5m.

This was based on written offers they claimed to have received from Chelsea and Scottish club Rangers.

They also want an additional £4m in damages.

The claim also includes lost gate receipts and merchandising sales after the German's departure to Anfield.

In May 2002 Boro's initial attempt to win compensation was dismissed.

But Boro appealed and Lord Justice Simon Brown of the Appeal Court said the lower court's decision had been unconvincing.

    :screw:
