Car Repairs - How much should it cost on average?

To have front brake discs and pads changed on a Peugeut 206 including labour and what not??

I have no idea and just been quoted £170 for the lot

Which seems a tad harsh to say the least....

call your local car shop (auto parts, side street etc) for a quote, last time i bought discs and pads it was about 30 quid

as far as im aware, taking 2 wheels off is not 140 quids worth of labour

    yeah, defo a bit steep.

£50 parts tops i would have though - plus, it's a eays job you can do your self - all you need is a socket set and the car jack.

the parts for that car add up to £40 all in (pads and discs).

It's about an hours work for an experienced mechanic, two hours for a noob with a haynes manual ;)

With labour around £30/hr, that means you should be paying in the region of £70-100 tops.

Or you can get the parts yourself, plus a haynes manual, and do it for about £45

    I recently got ripped off!

Needed new pads and discs on front, and pads on the back. I had waited tolong to get them changed and had started breaking with the indicator thingy on the pads, metal on metal!

I feel fooking stupid to tell you it cost me nearly £250!

thats because all garages now have a free health check system in place where basically they slag your car off to death then say you have been informed of theses defects and if you want to put your car back on the road when its not roadworthy sign here or if you want the work doing.....thats what we had to do at evans halshaw.... not just happy with yer eyeballs they want the eye sockets to

im also a qualified technician so if anyone wants work done cheaply?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Car Repairs - How much should it cost on average?

as a rough guide with the cars I've had, I've found that your average pads last around 30-40,000 miles and the average discs last between 80-120,000 miles.

If they tell you they're worn well inside of these limits, they're probably bullshitting you.

Every time your car goes through an MOT, they should check the thickness of your discs and pads, and they'd flag it up if there was an issue, so if you've had an MOT recently, it's not been flagged and the garage still insists they're worn, you can call gobshite.

but thats what the MOT's for! so basically it's not a legally binding thing - just something to scare the 'less technically minded' into getting the work done cause they THINK it's a legal thing?

Mine is at 120k miles mark and as far i know they've never been changed certainly not in the 3/4 years I've had it anyway...

I'm doing approx 250 miles a week just for work so the brakes do get caned to be fair...

Mot test is only technically valid for 1 day, and dont have to check the thickness of the brakes, if when doing the MOT test you notice, by looking thru the wheels or from underneath the car, that the brakes are low then you advise or fail the car accordingly.

you arnt allowed to remove or touch anything on an MOT test like wheels or something.

In my opinion the MOT test is really flawed for example if a car fails for having a hole in the chassis on the car you could put a big sticker over it and it will pass because the tester isnt allowed to remove anything. or if your windscreen is cracked inside the wiper blade area it would normally fail, however kick the windscreen through and it will pass.

    madness
