    Camera Keeps Knacking My PC

I got given a camera for Xmas, but havent really used it, until i went to Lanzarote last week. Now i am trying to transfer the pics across to my computer, but i cant get it to work.

The camera is a Hitachi HDC-886E. The instruction book says absolutely nothing about how to tranfer the photos over, but there is a CD and USB lead supplied. So i have installed the drivers off the CD, plugged in the USB and attached the camera. Nothing happens and no drive shows up, so i try switching the camera on and it shows a screen with the choice of PC, PC Camera and Printer. I select PC and instantly Windows crashes and a blue screen shows up saying the following.

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Check to make sure any new hardware of software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Setup Options, and the select Safe Mode."

I have made sure Windows is fully up to date, and tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. Same result.

No idea how to do any of the suggestions in the third paragraph.

    Anyone any ideas?

Update - it looks like the problem is not the camera.

I borrowed a card reader from work, connected it via the USB port, and Windows crashed again displaying the same message.

It therefore appears that the computer is rejecting any new hardware via the USB port.

Does anyone know what is causing this or how to fix it?

And now ive realised that it is not just new hardware, but any hardware.

If i plug anything at all into any of the USB ports, Windows shuts down.

If i was to re-install Windows would this help? Or are the ports fucked?

unfortunately resetting winsock hasnt made any difference

i notice it doesnt crash if i take the printer usb out and put it back in, but mp3 player (which used to work fine), camera and card reader all make it crash

sounds like somethings fucked - re-install XP BUT not a new install, just over the top of the previous version so it keeps all your files, programs, documents, etc.

Get XP disk and key, boot to it, select install XP, accept the EULA, at this point it'll search for previous installations - it should detect the old one, select it and choose repair - NOT new installation (this will fuck it) - then run thru the rest of the installation process as normal

    At the risk of sounding stupid . . . . .

    I have the XP disk.
    What is the key?
And what do you mean 'boot to it'? If you mean just put the CD in, i tried that, selected Install XP, but it wouldnt let me because apparently the version of Windowson my compter was newer than the version on my CD.

the key is just the licence key or serial that comes with the disk.

is it an XP pro disk you have ? is it XP Pro installed? sounds like a different disk.

    I managed to sort this.

Did a System Restore. Then didnt bother re-installing the camera software. Plugged the camera straight in, and it works fine.

    If anyone cares. :D
