Caldwell has red card overturned Showing how much of a joke Championship officials are again Steven Caldwell has had his sending off against West Ham on Saturday rescinded by the Football Association. Caldwell was red carded for violent conduct following an incident involving the Hammers midfielder Luke Chadwick. Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy was unhappy with referee Graham Salisbury's decision, claiming Caldwell made a genuine attempt to get the ball, and lodged an immediate appeal. And, after looking at the evidence, the FA has decided Caldwell did not warrant the card, saying it was "wrongful dismissal". McCarthy said: "I'm delighted and it means we'll have Steve available for the busy Christmas period. There's a lot of games in a short space of time and we need a full squad. "He's an honest lad and always maintained his innocence from the outset. I'd like to thank the FA for taking the time to consider it and I'm pleased that common sense has prevailed." It means the Scotland centre-back will not get an automatic three-game ban, freeing him to play in Sunderland's game at Cardiff on Saturday. Had the red card stood, Caldwell would have missed Sunderland's games against Cardiff, Burnley and Leeds United. Caldwell, 24, was sent off in the 41st minute of Saturday's game at the Stadium of Light, which Sunderland lost 2-0.
