Bye bye Marcus Stewart Cracking season he has had but i'am glad we will not be taking us to the premieship with us Marcus Stewart will play his last game for Sunderland against Stoke on Sunday. The 17-goal striker has been told that he will not get his contract renewed at the Stadium of Light. Stewart, who signed for the Black Cats three seasons ago, will leave on good terms after a heart-to-heart with manager Mick McCarthy this week. McCarthy confirmed: "Marcus is going. He came and asked me and I spoke to him. It was a difficult decision but it's all very amicable; he's comfortable with it and looking forward to a fresh challenge. "He's been terrific for the club and has had a brilliant season. He went through a goal drought but was still our best player by a mile. His movement and workrate is phenomenal." Stewart, 32, is unlikely to have any trouble finding a new club after an impressive season with the Black Cats. His Sunderland career has been transformed under McCarthy after a hugely disappointing first year at the club, a time the striker describes as "the worst of my career". But he emerged as an important player last season as Sunderland finished third before losing in the play-offs. The former Ipswich man, however, has left his best until last, playing a key role in the Black Cats' promotion. "Marcus is one I inherited and he was disenchanted when I came here," said McCarthy. "But I gave him the chance and he's taken it. "We've had run-ins during the last two years, that's normal, but they have always been sorted out quickly. "It was a difficult decision to make but Marcus does not want the sympathy vote. The last thing he wants is to be here and not playing. "It's the best decision for him. He can move on and get football on a regular basis."
Re: Bye bye Marcus Stewart if he has been ur best player as mick mcCarthy has said then why are u leting him go
Bit like when David Kelly left NUFC I for one would of loved to of seen Kelly graft a season in the Premiership - saying that we bought Beardsley and after his injury he wont on to become unreal for us and helped Andy Cole become the player his is / was
Re: Re: Bye bye Marcus Stewart He is 32 now and in all fairness to the bloke his legs have gone, yes he is still of a good standard to play Championship football but he is not of the standard anymore to play premiership football. In my opinion this is a great move from Mick and a good sign of things to come, it would of been very easy out of "loyalty" to just keep Stewart next season even though he knew he was not up to the task,Sounds like Mick has a very clear picture in his mind of just what is needed to stay up and more importantly the calibre of player it is going to take to achieve this.
Had to be done really. As much as I hate to see some1 shown the door after playing such a MASSIVE part in getting us to the premiership - at the end of the day its the right decision for the club. Well done Marcus tho!!!!! :worship:
Re: Re: Bye bye Marcus Stewart He is 32 and couldnt handle the pace of the premiership. Also He on around 20 grand a week so they will looking to get him off the wage bill and get someone in with a bit pace and sum 1 who is in there youth. I fancy us getting Clinton Morrison.
scary that you say hes not premiership standard but was our best player...I know hes getting on a bit but surely that means none of our other players will hack the premiership either
if i was a sland fan id be happy coz he couldnt do it last time u lot were in prem and he wont do it again !! he was a run of the mill average player who had one good season and everyone rates as being mint ie SAHA , A JOHNSON , PHILLIPS , BEATIEE (sp) !! to name a few !!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Bye bye Marcus Stewart Sunderland couldnt afford Bellamys wages and i dont think he will be wanting to play for a team thats fighting relegation.
