It pisses me off when people keep going on about how Bruce Lee would kick the shit out of any mixed martial artist of today.. all with his 135lb's of weight lol

If you read some stuff about him, you will learn that he really was a cut above everything else.

Large weight differences would pose a problem, but Bruce Lee really could have took apart 99% of fighters I reckon.

Lees Body fat % was so low, he was in unbelievable shape, absolutely unreal. Agile, tough, strong etc.

Yeah but he never fought in tournaments. It's all complete speculation with no proof that he could handle himself in a fight with rules. He may have had a chin of glass for all we know. Knowing how to fight, and training how to fight doesn't make you a good fighter unless you've proved it against the top competition.

and, he was amazing - anyone with that much dedication to an art has my respect.

regardless of this 'chin of glass' pata, you can't say fuck all. it was years ago too.

and MMA just isnt a good fighting sport anyway - if you got rid of the rolling about on the floor hugging eachother with shorts on business, then i'd watch it

Its more of a fight than any other sport so im not sure what you're relating to there. The rolling around on the floor is probably the most technical aspect of fighting.

a fight is a fight regardless of what kind of technique you are using. to say that MMA is 'more' than a fight than say boxing or single technique martial arts is quite redundant. alot of MMA bod's come from single technique specialisms anyway.

i can understand if your just a spectator of MMA, however i've done some MMA training last year and it just got really annoying after a while. and the rolling about on the floor, bars and locks etc - yet again is an ignorant statement because it BLATENTLY isnt the most technical aspect of fighting. :)

i've met some right funny bastards who do MMA at the boxing club i train at now, and they're giving it the whole "i do a mix between geet waxa street fighting and hebburn karate like", being all massive beer boy meat heads - and when it comes to them having a go sparring they get lashed all over because they dont have the stamina. BUT i've known a few REALLY good kickboxers go into MMA and have done really well for themselves.

i'm glad i go to boxing just for the crack, cba with the cross-technique rivalry going atm

i remember hearing about Ultimate Fighting in the late 80's/early 90's - you EXPECT the big fucker with hands like shovels to win - wrong ; Royce Gracie

I have to disagree with you there. Although I've never done any training, I've been a devoted fan of MMA and BJJ for years now and it takes a long time to understand what's going on on the floor. At the highest level of competition, it's not about just throwing on an arm bar.. you have to think 3 or 4 moves ahead in order to gain position and set it up. It looks like scrambling around with a bit of luck thrown in for whoever ends up on top, but it's not at all. They make it look easy a lot of the time but if you watch some BJJ tournaments, you'll notice that the majority of attempts at gaining position are countered instantly.

If I had to vote, I'd definitely say the ground game is way more technical than standing. You have to know how to counter the stand up first, then work the wrestling, then work the submissions and that stuff means knowing which arm to put under what body part, which way to lean your weight etc etc

bruce lee was indeed an amazing fighter (in the day) we have to remember that he appeared in a time when most westerners still fought like cowboys in a saloon.
fighting and sports nutrition, medicine and techniques have vastly become advanced (much of them from bruce himself) since the 70's.
however weight does not have anything to do with it,take for example if you put matt hughes in with tim silvia would the outcome be obvious ?
mma fighters are the best there is at this time but nobody could predict who is best !!
i.e semi schilt is brilliant in k1 but poor in mma, mirco cro crop is good in mma but not so good at k1.
the argument could go on forever but unless there is a fight system allowed without rules and ref's then you could never argue what is the best style.
however i think bas rutten would take some beating in "no rules"

I agree with some of what you're saying, but the fact is weight DOES matter, but only when the skills of each fighter are matched first. The bigger good fighter is always going to beat the smaller good fighter, and these days there are a lot of extremely good bigger fighters to match the smaller ones. As for Bruce Lee.. he was strong, fast, knew a shit load about a range of martial arts but he never put it into practice and like you say, a lot has changed from back then. He stood out because he was ahead of his time. These days, he'd probably just be another bloke from over the water who knows some sweet moves, but until it's proven in the ring, it's all just talk.

Oh, and Bas Rutten couldn't fight now.. his knees are fucked :p

there are hundreds of examples that go against that !!
royce gracie proved it many times
    tyson proved it many times
    cro crop
    bonjaski
    mir
bruce lee fought many people bigger than himself to prove that exact point.
granted, many times a big guy will win but the fitness/stamina of a smaller guy will always be higher than a bigger guy.

bas is very capable of beating anyone in no rules now,he just doesn't do competition and constant training for competition anymore but still trains enough to keep him in shape.

You're missing the point.. Royce Gracie won because he used methods that were previously untested/unknown and he showed the world that a fight isn't going to go the way it does in the Dojo.. You aren't going to win just because you're a black belt in 5 different martial arts or because you've never lost a single discipline competition. Bruce Lee knew this, but back then the competition didn't. Move on 10 years or so to UFC 60, Royce vs Hughes and the fighting world has evolved, including the competition that would be available for Bruce Lee to try his stuff on.. Royce is no longer the better fighter because the top fighters have all bases covered. The same goes for the big vs small argument.. At the highest level, if the two fighters are matched in skill, the bigger one wins 90% of the time. Your examples of smaller fighters winning is because of skill levels not being equal. Take BJ Penn vs GSP.. BJ is an amazing fighter probably #1 in the world at LW, but when there's a weight advantage for the #1 WW fighter in the world, the lighter fighter has no chance. Boxing isn't a good example of this theory though, because it's a very restrictive fight.. basically you punch me and I'll punch you back. Having the option to take the fight to the ground at any point changes the dynamics a lot.

He's not.. he trains to keep in shape, but his knees are in a really bad way, he said himself he's in no shape to fight anymore and that sometimes he has trouble walking down his drive because of his knees. He's has loads of surgery on them.

its still very hard to define !
for example in the gracie days many fights lasted over an hour of no movement, this can never happen nowadays as refs are instructed to stand fighters up (for viewing and entertainment value) therefore many fighters are training much more in standing and wrestling(because throws can finish a fight quicker than waiting for a submission)
but then the gracies wore gi's wich helped them get grip
the argument can go on for ever.
nobody can say till ALL rules are taken out of fighting...

now that would be entertainment !!!
