Got glassed in a Newcastle resturant last night! He was having a meal with his wife and Mick McCarthy and his wife! How stupid them 2 going for a meal in Newcastle. Even though it should never of happened, and is well out of order, it's not very intelligent for them is it? Just been on Sky Sports News

    Murray Attacked In Glassing Incident…
    Chairman Injured in Newcastle Restaurant

Bob Murray was attacked in a Newcastle restaurant on Friday night. It is, at present, unclear whether the Sunderland chairman was attacked by Newcastle or Sunderland fans, but the incident, which took place at around 11pm, left Mr Murray with a facial injury and Mrs Murray with a damaged eye. The couple were having dinner with Mick McCarthy and his wife and it is understood that if the gaffer hadn’t have stepped in the situation would have been worse.

The club have released the following statement. "Sunderland AFC can confirm that there was an incident at a Newcastle restaurant last night. Mr and Mrs Murray and Mr and Mrs McCarthy were having a meal when the incident occurred at approximately 11pm. A beer glass was used in an attack on Mr Murray, who sustained an injury to his face. Mrs Murray also sustained an eye injury caused by flying glass. The police have advised Mr and Mrs Murray, Mr and Mrs McCarthy and the club not to comment further at this time."

it was one of there own :

Sunderland boss Bob Murray was glassed in the face in a vicious attack by a Black Cats fan at an exclusive Newcastle restaurant.

His wife Sue was also injured in the attack which occurred as they shared a meal with the club's manager Mick McCarthy and his wife Fiona.

The Sunday Sun understands that McCarthy, intervened in an effort to stop the assault at Vujon, an upmarket curry restaurant in Newcastle's trendy Quayside area on Friday.

Last night, a usually reliable source told the Sunday Sun that the attacker was a Sunderland fan whose family are well known in the local business world.

The incident was said to have begun in the toilet when the man who later attacked Mr Murray asked the Sunderland chairman: "Why don't you put your hand in your pocket for McCarthy?"

This is believed to have been a reference to providing more transfer funds for the manager.

The source said that after both men returned to their tables, the attacker carried on in the same vein for some time, but there was no violence until Mr Murray's party stood up and prepared to leave.

"There was blood all over the restaurant after Murray and his wife were glassed," the source added.

In a statement issued to the Sunday Sun yesterday, a club spokesman said: "Sunderland AFC can confirm that there was an incident at a Newcastle restaurant on Friday night.

"Mr and Mrs Murray and Mr and Mrs McCarthy were having a meal when the incident occurred at approximately 11pm.

"A beer glass was used in an attack on Mr Murray. He sustained an injury to his face. Mrs Murray also sustained an eye injury caused by flying glass.

"The police have advised Mr and Mrs Murray and Mr and Mrs McCarthy not to comment further at this time."

It is not known whether Mr and Mrs Murray received hospital treatment for their injuries.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Northumbria police revealed they are investigating the incident, saying: "We can confirm that we're investigating a complaint from the chairman of Sunderland Football Club that he was assaulted in a Newcastle restaurant on Friday night."
Mr Murray, a multi-millionaire former accountant who made his fortune selling kitchens and bathrooms, is the longest serving chairman in Sunderland's history.

He succeeded motor dealer Sir Tom Cowie in 1986 who had been hugely unpopular with fans.

Both Mr Murray and Mr McCarthy have also been under pressure from fans after their team's poor start to the season.

Their home defeat to Birmingham yesterday left them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League and without a top-flight win at the Stadium of Light for three years.

Vujon, which specialises in deluxe Indian cuisine, is a popular haunt with well-to-do food fans from all over the region.

It was voted the best North restaurant in last year's Good Curry Guide and is situated in Queen Street which also boasts top chef Terry Laybourne's Cafe 21 and a clutch of other eating houses popular with discerning diners.

While the area is renowned for its boisterous character, Vujon's reputation is for a quiet night-out with stylish decor and a sophisticated clientele.

Vujon owner Matab Miah spoke of his shock at the attack. He said: "Mr Murray is a regular and very valued customer.

"This is the first time that an incident of this kind has happened at the restaurant in the 16 years we have been here.

"Everything happened inside the premises and the assault came from another diner.

"Mr Murray is a high profile customer. We have many high profile customers and have entertained Deputy Prime Ministers here without any problems before.

"We are a very quiet restaurant and things like this just don't happen here."

A resident at nearby Blue Anchor Court, a complex of upmarket flats, said: "It's shocking. You have some of the best restaurants in town here with Vujon and Cafe 21.

"Friday nights can be rowdy but that tends to be a few hundred yards up the road where more of the pubs are. It's really shocking.

"With so many restaurants around here you tend to get more mature people who want a pleasant evening out not violent thugs who go around attacking people while they are enjoying a meal."
