    bank charges

anyone watching Trevor McD on claiming back bank charges?

I sent off letter to my bank about two weeks ago and am starting to get replies now listing my charges.

If you have charges to claim back then check out the Motley Fool website -

    http://www.fool.co.uk/news/foolseyeview/2006/fev060504c.htm?ref=foolwatch

I will be reporting back as things develop

    Interesting.

Potentially much faster than earning it, so I am going to do the same.

    Thanks

The first stage of claiming them back is to write to your bank using the letter in the link I posted asking for details of any charges you have incurred.

You can only go back six years and they can charge you up to £10 for the information under the Data Protection Act.

    It's an absolute fucking mission.

I'm halfway through claiming back charges with Lloyds and Smile.

The Smile ones are a bit over 600quid, and go back over the last 6yrs. I've had to send an official request under the Data Protection act requesting any info related to charges made against me. They've got 40days t6 respond.

The Lloyds account i've only had for the last year so only have 120quid of charges on it. Had internet access to my account so didn't need exact info from the bank on the charges, so have skipped ahead a step and sent them an official 'letter requesting repayment'. Apparently lLloyds are the worst bank to claim charges back off though, and will fight you every step of the way, in some cases waiting until youre literally on the steps of the courthouse before they setltle.

Apparently every bank so far has settled though, some people saving thousands, so it's worth doing.

Have a look here and on the message board that that ste links to.

Will a bank still have records of an account which was closed last year?

Half of it wasn’t my fault

on one occasion GNER charged me twice for 1 set of train tickets making me go withdrawn coincidentally causing 3 checks to bounce and making me incur £118.00 worth of charges

Halifax (without any warning whatsoever) decided to take £500 off my overdraft last year. Not unreasonably, I kept on using my card -> x3 sets of charges, but I successfully got them back.

This whole business is completely unreasonable, its outrageous that you spend 2 weeks phoning idiots and letter writing to get back money that they've mistakenly charged you, wheras they'll charge £30 for sending me an e-mail to say you're over your limit.

Did this happen about a year after you graduated from uni?

If it did you should of read the small print in the leaflets for the student account when you opened. It tells you that they will reduce your overdraft by £500 each year after graduation until it is £0 unless any other arrangements are set.

thats true but they inform you first by letter they don't just do it, they did with me anyway, and my overdraft doesn't go down by £500 its just the interest free overdraft goes down that much, you still have £2000, but only 1500 is interest free.

I didn't know that :spangled: I've had a full 2000 overdraft but never had any letters saying it's not going to be interest free any more? I just put £1200 into my ING account to take advantage of the 6% interest they have on it at the mo but that's taking me upto £1500 overdrawn so will have to be careful :( Unless it's just with some accounts as I'm sure I should have been told it's not interest free anymore??

We had a woman in work yesterday who got charged £1100 every month just in bank charges

I must be owed about £3000 for fucks sake  - I'm shite with money. Which is disgraceful considering I'm a finance manager.

If this will work I can see pound signs already

ah my god... definately going to try this. I'm always going over my overdraft limit. And last month they took over 110 quid off me for charges alone.

    I'll be minted :D
