    Bank Charge Fiasco's

Rang Halifax a few weeks back to order my statements in hope id be owed a nice little sum as some of my mates have previously received!

The legends at Halifax then tell me there is a £5 charge for all my statements, I asked them to send them electronically to which they said they cant do?
However, they offered me an alternative which was a free service, this was that Halifax would work out my charges for me & send the final figure by letter (which was a lot less work for me & free, I couldnt understand there method but never mind?).

I woke up this morning to find a HUGE batch of letters containing my statements from Halifax from the past 6 years, puzzled I called them as I was just expecting a letter with (hopefully) a sum regarding what I was owed from overcharges.

They then tell me that this free service which I was offered has been withdrawn (but no customers informed) & as a result all statements were sent to me free of charge, which is fine, just a bit more a ball ache for me. I then ask where I need to go from here, once Iv'e worked all my charges out?
The legends then tell me I just need to write in with the figure I have generated & then my complaint will be kept on file until the court case that 7 major Banks are undergoing has came to a verdict. I was then informed that the court case can take anything up to 2 years & is only 3 weeks in!!

    My luck all over.

I cant help thinking though, if they can send a MASSIVE batch of statements out which obviously takes around the same admin time & manpower to send an overcharge/late payment letter (which is Halifax's justification how they generate the late payment charge), how come they can only charge £5 for the statements yet £30 for these sort of letters?

    Shocking...... and gutted :(

    (2 years & counting)

the most a bank is allowed to charge you for a copy of your records is £10 (under the Data Protection Act) so the £5 a pop is bullshit.

sorry this doesnt help you much

If you have credit cards then nows the time to start checking out the charges on them as the case hasnt gone to court yet for CC.

use http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/bank-charges + the forums on there, without that i wouldnt have got mine back a couple of weeks back (after the test case was announced). they have info on individual banks too.

they should have all the advice you need with excellent letter templates + the consumer action group is good too.

    good luck, its worth it!

Whatever happends just keep on at them. My dad hassled them for statements and allsorts. After a couple weeks of hassling and threatning to take them to court they offered him 400 quid settlement out of the blue which his refused to take. They then offered him 2 grand which he took the next day.

Halifax are shit like, i want to move banks as well.

i'd done exactly the same proudy. got my statements back about 2 weeks ago now, and a letter came with it advising me not to follow up anything as this case was back underway.

i still hav'nt set up a parachute account yet but i think im gonna follow it up anyways. i'll only palm it off again, if i dont do it now.

    good luck anyways :cool2:

Will they debit the £10 cheque cos i sent two off a while ago minus cheques cos i didnt have the money, the start of Aug to be precise and have heard nowt back?

Would it be better re-sending with the £10 cheques?

    Cheers

no point pushing it now. if the banks fail they will be ordered to repay every bank charge anyway, if they are successful they wont be paying out

Bollox. I work for halifax. the service is still running. sum1 probs just done something wrong to cover up. It doesnt take 2 years at all. Write in with the figure and tell them your going to take it to court. They should offer you a settlement figure which will be about half, deny it and ask for more. Dont let them control the case cos itl take for ever. Im suprised you got statement at all. Theres like a 5 week back log of statements to be sent out. lol.

    Re: Re: Bank Charge Fiasco's

I have since received a letter from Halifax stating that no Bank charge payouts will be honoured until the court case has came to a verdict?

Should I just persist with trying to get some money from them earlier? either way im going to still put forward the complaint but happy days if your word is true!:king:

And yes you are - Legend!

Just rang Halifax again there & they said this service is still running which the 1st operator has obviously filled me full of shit.

The request of all bank charges (The Bank Works them out & gives you final figure) is called a DSAR form (Data Subject Acess Support form), just for anyone else that gets palmed off like I 1st did.:)

I'm off to court against the Halifax a week on tuesday! Gary - don't listen to them about the test case. Newcastle court is keeping going with them. You've got nothing to lose by starting now.
