    anti virus software

im using mcafee security centre atm, but its draining too much memory...

i just want a basic low level virus scanner... all i use my pc for is to play mp3s and dvds so having the av equivelant of fort knox on my pc isnt really a necessity... anyone suggest an alternative?

    thanks :)

depends if you download much/have much downloaded copied onto your PC. If there's lots of file copying on and off yer machine - i'd have a permanent virus scanner - if not - a decent firewall and occasional Trend scan will do the trick

also keep your PC Uptodate with the windows updates, as these will prevent alot of virus's which target holes in windows

You dont need a memory resident AV in my opinion.

Use a firewall and a one that checks your incoming SMTP mail.

Also run a full check once a month or so.

I just use AVG and it seems fine. All its ever detected is the odd dodgy trojan from random sites.

Dont use firewall software either, not lucky enough to have had a proper virus or anyone tryin to hack my computer!!!

    I feel left out!\:(

I've had a blast on XP64, not noticed too much difference tbh, everything seems a wee bit quicker is all - maybe because there's not much software that utilises it. I'm waiting for Longhorn before I go 64-bit meself.

The 64-bit suse is supposed to be mint tho

yeah you do need a virus scanner you firewall will let things through, if you download an mp3 with a virus attached when you play it, it will infect your computer.

I say stay with the one you've got, iespecially if your stuff using your computer for tunes and stuff it's not like you need the memory the program is taking up.
