A Decade in Clubland

Much as i try to forget about it, the big 2-5 approaches and I have offically been clubbing for 10yrs.

Much has happened, little has changed..well, kinda, but thats another dissertation (aarrrgh 10k words flashback flasback)

Any ideas as to how I can celebrate this landmark, other than shopping for new brain cells to replace the ones Ive lost.

Anyway, I celebrated my 25th by getting totally bladdered and making a rip roaring cvnt of myself, like most birthdays really.

A weekender in Leeds or Liverpool

Heres something that will make you feel better....i first went clubbing to the Blue Monkey in sunderland in 1990!!!!!

Hope you dont feel as old now!

I used to go to Klute in Durham (voted by Loaded mag the worst nightlcub in Europe)

I also went to the original Afterdark, the Coliseum, Judgement Day, Back to Basics in Leeds, The Sugar Shack went it was handbag glam house...ahhh them was the days.

fink im probs gonna go to Promise as that is on the night of my bday, 26/9. The line up isnt my kinda fing (no offense peeps) but thats where everyone will probs be and I get more free birthday drinks, aye!!

ps clarky your about 12 now so in 1990 you would have just been born, also the Blue Monkey was surely the Coliseum by another name and was in Norton???



The original After Dark was in SUnderland methink?? was a long time ago and brain is very addled

the blue monkey, became the mall, which then became visage, which is now zanzibar on stockton high-street

the colliseum, used to be an old jazz club before if i remember right.

This Clarky is 30! I am sure the Blue Monkey was the Colly & I think it was called Henry Africas before that.

The original afterdark was in Sunderland DJ Roppa of Venue fame used to play there .

I also fancy Funkissential, I will find out when the next 1 is on the UK it will be September or October.

PS Can Lee Foster pleas post the rave history of the North East!!!!

could there of been more than one blue monkey?

i was in nappies at the time, so i am going off what i remember talkin about as a kid.

When is this Ibiza Retro?

Yeah Clarky is 30 and the original Blue monkey was on John street in sunderland....it was at its best from 90-92 but unfortunatly it was burned down in early 94....after that the original after dark opened on roker ave in sunderland..i went a couple of times but it was to dark and dingy and full of dodge-pots so i stopped going "raving" then. and never really bothered any more until 96 when i went to work in ibiza.

I used to go there round that time to, had some "beltin" times in there. After the Monkey it would be down "the docks" for sitting in cars for a smoke etc. Can remember this one guy, "Dave the Rave" was always there, standing on a wall dancin like a mad man!

Last time we went was the night some lad got stabbed. Then down the docks there was a bunch of crazies gettin in people's cars and givin them a slap. Don't think we ever went back...on to somewhere new.

Dave the rave is still knocking about...he used to have a dodge to a night i used to run in sunderland about a year ago.......last time a saw him was acouple of weeks ago..i was playing at hanger 13 and he was there.....the bloke is a self proclaimed legend!!

I think I may nip down to Yarm for the classics.

The monkey was never the same after Pop got stabbed... i was a witness...had to go to identity parades ...they wanted me to be a witness in court too...F*** that!!!!
