    a board podcast

I know the ideas been floated round in the music forum that it might be a good idea to try and do a board podcast.

I think Rob had a similar idea when this board was renamed and he tried to get various names from around newcastle involved in producing a guestmix.

I've got a server capable of hosting said mixes and the geekery to sort out a podcast, the format I was thinking of was that we try to get a different mix each week from one of the regulars, across all the styles of music they like to play.

The obvious benefits for us is that it may attract more board members, you get your mix hosted for free if you submit a podcast, and we all get to listen to stuff the members on here play.

Just wondering what other people think on this? Would they be willing to bash up a mix? What would you want to see on it? And most importantly, would anyone be interested in giving this a go?

Rob/Mods/Council - I'd welcome any thoughts you have on this :)

you dont NEED to be able to mix to make a podcast... a podcast is'nt a mix. May aswell call it a weekly mix if that was the case.

Anyways, if i got the chance to do a podcast for this board, chances are it would be a mix   i'd love to have a go though!!! B) B) B)

Conway, do you know anyway of getting the cast on itunes also so it can be subscribed too as well as d/loaded?

yeah, there is a way to do it - you have to write the feed file so it matches a certain standard and then submit it to the online itunes store :) You also have to make sure you've got a few podcasts/sessions on it otherwise they won't add it.

It usually takes a few weeks for it all to get sorted.

    I'd be up for this.

Best way to get the feed suitable for iTunes is to run it through Feedburner. You get a nice URL too.

I currently use Feedburner and run my MySpace blog feed through it (the blog includes a podcast enclosure).

the council aint existed for ages chumps

i reckon it's a good idea, weekly is probably a bit difficult to keep track of / uddate / administer BUT a monthly 1 would work.

there's plenty of people putting their mixes up montly so i reckon it's a win-win situation

    by the way...

a podcast is a link (like an RSS feed) not to 1 particular mix, but it's like a subscription to a magazine - but it's free!

then, every month/week/whatever there's a new file added that you can choose to download. BUT you need the software to do it - Most people use iTunes (podcast is apple's name for it) for example i've got a few i get regulary, russel brand's radio2 show, etc - iTunes checks automatically and downloads it for me

A podcast is just a collection of music files bundled together.

A special file (like a web page) is used which holds details of each music file, what is on it and where a user can download it. These web pages can be "subscribed" to by itunes and a few other music download programs.

When the file is updated with details of a new edition/episode for the podcast, itunes updates its copy by downloading it to your pc/mac and sticking it on your ipod automatically.

A live stream is easily done too, but it's a question of sorting out shows and slots.

I think sorting a radio for the board is a much bigger/harder task than a monthly or weekly podcast though :( you'd find people would be happy to stream at night, but what about the dead space during the day when everyone's at work? Or the weekend at night when everyone's out getting goosed?

(saying that I'm confident rossy could fill an early sunday am slot with some psytrance  )

There's nothing to stop people using their podcast slot as an hours radio sesh - all you need is a decent mic and the guts to use it :) roger sanchez does a similar thing with his podcast (in fact, it's just a cut down version of his radio show).

does'nt have to be dance too - people can chuck up what they want, feeling a bit eclectic...

i think shoutcast has a way of playing saved shows when theres not a live show playing. you could save previous shows, or stream sets - or the podcasts

marty, podcasts are just the same as a mix download, exactly the same, its an mp3. the difference being you can subscribe to the service instead of checking back when you suspect its time for a new one - if you dont use itunes as your default player its still the same, you have to open it up specifically and let it check for you.

good for the ipod generation, but no good for you and your minidisc :p
