If the persons using MSN messenger you can get their Ip by sending them a file, when transfer begins, open up Windows Command (Dos prompt)

    type in netstat

this will reveal the users domain-mirc type name

put this address into a domain Lookup (either web based or program) and hey presto their ip!

EVERYONE who stores ANYTHING on their pc that they dont want others to access shud have a firewall yeah.

But remember, if someone wants to get to it badly enuff and ur PC remains connected to the internet...they can.

Id certainly recommend a firewall for all internet users. ZoneAlarm is the best i think, easiest to use and it masks all ports, so very hard to get in unless the attacker really is a pro and seriously wants to waste time getting into a home pc

as for subseven.......its the shittest, lamest program of all time!

2 be fair not many hackers will take any interest in hacking a home pc.

Getting someones address from their ip isn't easy... most hackers will just try and get your name via your isp, once you have someones name getting their address is a peace of piss.

If you associate with hacker/computer sorts get a firewall, but very few randoms will physically hack into your dial up.

    I disagree there mate.

You will find that there are LOADS of twats that prey on home pc users.

Mostly because they are uneducated and can prove an easy target.

Fair enuff big players wont bother with home users but there al a million and 1 "toolz" available for the "skript kiddies" to use and hack the unsuspecting home user.....

Its amazing how many port probes etc ya will actually receive in a day - some ppl have nothing better to do

"but very few randoms will physically hack into your dial up."

maybe, but thousands of fools try to, if you look at a firewall log you would be amazed!

As for the IP, its pretty much impossible to get your real address from an IP.

Unless they can use the IP, hack into the ISPs mainframe computer, and search for the IP which would give you their domain name, and then somehow use that to get someones name and then address, its gonna br pretty hard!

Cant see how having someones name is going to makes matters much easier either like

Its pretty complicated Che to actually get into someones PC, any fool can do port scans etc, and randomly get your IP, but getting into your machine by having your IP is for the pros, who wont even bother!

Couldnt tell you how to get in to someones pc, but there are several tools for IP scans, port scans etc etc all for the sad bastards with nothing better to do!

they can pick any IP address - which they have come across by some means (gotten ya IP from msn/icq etc) or whatever...

then they can get applications where there enter an IP and can scan for open ports...which cud allow then to penetrate your system.

an easy way to think of it is maybe your pc being a house and the windows/doors being the ports. if you leave open your window/door then someone can hop on in (MAYBE!) and burgle ya :D

if your interested av got a canny cd-rom which explains about windows 2k/xp security - howto protect your pc etc....
