We have nothing to apologise or be grateful for.

Our nation is not humiliated  It's quite right that the situation was resolved diplomatically. I'd have been far more embarassed if we waded in with an overzealous military strike.

Whatever they were trying to do, the iranians have played it skillfully

    guantanamo bay anyone?
cia flying prisons backed by the UK perhaps?

.. yeah, our record on kidnapping people is crystal clean.

Im NOT pro iranian - but this whole affair stinks. Im pleased that our servicemen and women are safe, but to be honest i think Iran have played this perfectly - if you saw tony blairs statement before, he just looked like a fool - Iran said themselves that the UK barely did anything about these servicemen, other than wage a propaganda war in the west about it.

I wonder if the point was to say to the Americans that negotiating with Iran could be successful.

They'd obviously been planning to release them, having suits for them all and a slick press conference.

Clearly, this is no way justifies their kidnapping the first place, but lets face it all most people will remember is what a nice chap Ahmedinejad seemed yesterday  That's why they've played it skillfully.

if you and your daughter were staying at your uncles and his next door neighbour snatched your little girl from his garden; held her to ransom; then gave her back to you as a gift.... would you be as "jolly good show old sport" as you are.

Our nation has been humilated and you all seem delighted....

I'm delighted the situation has been resolved without bloodshed. It is clearly the best possible outcome.

I suppose you would've preferred, oh I don't know, a 2 week war that kills 1000 civilians, polarises the Arab world against you and doesn't get the troops back? Yeah, then you look really noble and reasonable.

?? I'm not saying he is a nice chap (I'm quite sure he's not), but the point is that he came across as reasonable yesterday.

    HE KIDNAPPED OUR FUCKING TROOPS!

    The guy:

    executes gay men
    denies the holocaust
    threatens to destroy israel
    kidnaps troops from foreign waters
    funds middle eastern terrorism
    arms middle eastern terrorism
    encourages & supports war

Think about who you label reasonable andy....

I know this, and I've staunchly opposed it? Just because you think someone has done something skillfully doesn't mean you support it

No, but your affable 'he acted a nice guy' dickhead attitude seems to condone it.

The point was that (on channel 4 news anyway) he didn't look anything like a 'mad dog'. How many people are going to read wikipedia for the full speech if even I didnt? They've played the media skillfully and I think they'll probably benefit from it.

I wouldnt have minded seeing a transcript of that funny press conference thing he did - apparently he spent the first hour or something detailing the UK and USA's various naughty acts over the years ....

.... the military decoration bit was a bit surreal like.

a little bit off topic.. Did you see how horrible the suits were? I would have rather had my head lopped off than be seen on the evening news wearing one of them
