i had trouble finding a job in the sector i wanted when i left uni and ended up with a job paying 10k a year for a year, in order to give me the experience i needed.

    good luck :)

For most of them they put you up in a hotel for however many months you're in that location for. The locations are rarely glam though, they're always big business towns like Swindon or Slough.

Grad training schemes aren't all they're cracked up to be imo. You have to be away from home for long periods, with people you don't know. Lots of places you won't get a lot of respect because people think you've just got there because of your degree (which you probably have). And when there's too many grads in a company they tend to hit a ceiling where there's too many, so where do they go after that??
They're also pretty difficult to get onto.... lots of people i know have spent a year or so applying and got no where.

I'd say try the 'normal' job market but look for small businesses who want grads. They won't pay you as much as a big place but you'll move up the ranks just as quick and have far more responsibility from the off.

However, I've heard places like Deloitte, Ernst and Young and KPMG have good training schemes where you meet lots of people and have loads to do. You have to do a massively boring job though!

sorry about the ramble. good luck x

The northeast is a graveyard for careers outside of call centres, government and nhs

Add engineering jobs to that list as well... Companies are desperate for engineers with degrees in the appropriate field and pay accordingly...

I think a lot of people discount the North East too quickly. You might not start on as high a salary as in London here, but there are still quite a lot of jobs available in all kinds of industry.

People are becoming too Londoncentric imo.

one of the problems for graduates up there is the amount of competition.....Newcastles population is only around 300,000 yet there are 5 universities within a 30 mile radius (plus FE Colleges etc), one job my gfriend went for (primary school teacher in a grim school in gateshead) had over 700 applicants ffs

Thing is ill not be bothered where I am as long as I am earning a decent wage :)

My degree has nothing to do with anything really, so I'm "utilising my extensive experience within a customer service based role over the last 5 years to enable me to fulfill the criteria required for entry into roles, as I have consistently demonstrated that I am able to not only outperform people who work full time in the same job, but have been awarded various cash prizes and a discretionary pay rise"

so my degree, as others have said is simply a foot in the door, and some of the qualities they look for such as time management, and things will come from my uni degree, but most from my work.

I'm totally flummoxed like. I know that I have so much to offer a company and that I would be an asset in terms of the level of customer service I can give, but getting it across and finding something suitable is a nightmare.

    GRRRRRRR

i got fed up with my degree so i quit, i got a foundation degree before i quite which isnt worth much, especially seeing as though i want a total career change. the job i do now can get tedius and the hours arent very sociable but the pay is alright, ive been pondering an OU course in some sort of engineering disciplin
