Local News Collapse fear Aug 30 2002 By The Evening Chronicle A cordon was thrown around Newcastle's historic heart this afternoon as a landmark building was in danger of being reduced to rubble. Hundreds of people were evacuated from shops, cafés, bars and offices as a major operation began to try to save the Grade I listed building. And all Metro services coming into the city centre were suspended because of fears a collapse would damage the tunnels below. It is believed workers carrying out renovations on 22-23 Grainger Street had undermined the Victorian building's foundations. One construction worker on the site said: "We have been renovating it and I suppose the foundations have been undermined "We were told suddenly to get out because there was chance the building could go at any moment so we had to move quickly. It looks like it will definitely fall." This afternoon police were considering a controlled demolition of the former TSB bank. Catherine Mansueto, 34, a systems analyst, who had been working in the building, said: "The fire alarms suddenly went off and we were told to get out as quickly as possible because it looked like the whole thing was going to fall. "You can actually see where part of the building has already fallen down and it is quite scary thinking we were inside when that happened. "I have left everything inside, I don't even have enough money to get the Metro home. My bag, my house keys, everything could be gone." Finlay Booth, a senior analyst at JHC, said: "When we got outside there were police everywhere telling us to move away. I am really worried about my car because it is parked outside the building. "There is a lot of work inside which we would lose if the whole thing went down." As the danger of collapse grew greater, police moved the crowds, who had gathered to watch the spectacle, further back. Looks like Orbit will have to walk.
