The road was completely closed for the whole night.

MoS that sounds awful :( Does anybody actually know what properly happened?

Seems to be a few stories!

the cars that were involved, people had got out and were trying to direct them past... you could tell it was serious cause none of the cars involved were moved till well late... they were waiting for the forensics

What a stupid idiot if this is true... I feel for the driver/s and the parents.

Idiots such as this playing chicken have no consideration for anyone but themselves and as far as Im concerned, it's one less chav to worry about who otherwise would be going out causing trouble. Maybe the gang will think twice before doing anything so stupid! Harsh i know but these people need to learn a lesson.

Just the other night, travelling through Cramlington on the bus, school kids got off the bus and then held onto the side of the bus, the driver was really shaken up and they thought it was hilarious, they had no consideration for anyone else.

you'd hope so - but i doubt it... hence motorists get the blame and have to foot the bill. Next the council will be building bigger fences to 'protect' them and making us pay for them too...

Short-cut to death on coast road Nov 13 2005
By Sarah Robertson, The Sunday Sun

A woman died last night after being run over while apparently trying to cross a busy North road in darkness.

She was struck by a car on the A1058 Coast Road in North Tyneside, one of the region's busiest roads and an infamous accident blackspot.

The victim, who had last night not been named, was hit by a vehicle travelling towards the city on the dual carriageway.

The accident happened just next to Wallsend Golf Club, on the westbound carriageway, at around 7.30pm.

It is believed the woman, who lived nearby, tried to cross the road to get to a neighbouring housing estate instead of using a subway less than 100 yards away.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "A serious road traffic accident occurred on the westbound carriageway of the A1058 coast road at Wallsend."

Late last night the carriageway remained closed as investigations continued into the exact cause of the tragedy.

One motorist who was caught in the tailback said she had travelled on the other side of the carriageway just minutes after the crash happened.

Samantha Kelso, from West Moor, Newcastle, said: "I was driving towards Tynemouth and saw a police car going in the opposite direction but never thought anything of it.

"When I travelled back towards Newcastle I hit a queue of traffic, and as I went past I saw two ambulances and three more police cars.

"I think a lot of people do cross at that point because there are housing estates on either side of the road, but there is a subway nearby."

Between 1999 and 2001 six people have been killed and 17 more injured on the Coast Road.

It was a young lad, I know his family, no he was not playing chicken. He'd been watching the match with his friends, had a few drinks and decided to try and cross the road instead of use the underpass.

His mum reported him missing the following morning but the police couldn't do anything for 24 hours. When they finally did put 2 and 2 together after the 24 hours was up they could only identify him by his jewellry. Hence no details being released for a while and confusion over who it was.
