    Bird Flu

has anybody heard anything about this yet? The deadly virus that they think has entered Europe  its carried by birds and they think its going to come into England. They are expecting it to effect 25% of the population and they said in 1918 when a simular disease was around it killed like 4 million (or 40 million I cant remember what they said) aww Ive just watched that fake small pocks epidemic thing  Im scared now

It has the potential to kill as many people again, there's no cure for it, and we have airtravel and things this time round if it happens - it will tend to kill older, more infirm patients though, and you never know, a vaccine may become available.....

    Scary stuff.

they said the vaccine only works though if you take it 48 hours after you get symptoms but by the time u realise its not normal flu and book an appointment it might be too late .

They said last time it came in 1918 it affected both young and old people and killed both :(

Supportive treatment will be much better these days, and preventing it will be easier now we understand about more about how it spreads, and hand washing and stuff.

If it does strike next year I'll be based in hospital, so i'll be in the firing line :(

But without wishing to sound distasteful even if 40 million people die worldwide, there are 6 billion people, so you're odds are less than 1% straight off. And I suspect it will be far worse in developing countries than here.....let's hope it doesn'tt spread too far.

First read about this months ago, thankfully it hasn't spread here yet. With any luck it won't be as bad as expected... A lot of the information available is newspaper scare stories.

The spanish flu killed ~40 million,

Scientists at the Centre for Disease control in Atlanta, managed to decipher the Genome of the Spanish flu and its similar to the Avian flu. The weird thing about the Spanish flu was that it attacked the young and healthy and not the elderly and the weak. Also the estimates of deaths from Spanish flu a difficult to guage because of the number of deaths associated with WW1.

Not good news especially with the no. of office workers these days, and the air conditioning systems recycling air and distributing throught the office. Additionally as it gets colder ppl stay inside more and turn up the heating, this allows the flu virus to last longer in the air between hosts.

    :(
