I'd say some sort of roles need to be assigned to people first - then funding needs to be looked at.

It can be done, the old crasher lot made their own when theirs was shut down

If I can help, I'm in.

It needs to keep the Spirit of the Promise board.

We can't just migrate to an already established forum.

As a geek I feel a role is only right.

Dont expect it will be cheap though, and lets be realistic, as with so many things like this, people are all enthusiastic about keeping it going, but after a while it will dwindle away to nothing.....like holiday friends when you were younger who you swore you would keep in touch with forever

Good idea, im all up for it, but we do need to be realistic.

Nanna and Rob are the best people to ask.

Perhaps we could just move this very forum to a new domain/host. Starting from scratch would not be too grand.

well Rob has said in another thread they are paying £50-£100 a month for the bandwidth.

Where is this mythical £30 a year place?? I could do with such a host.

If we were going to just simply take over the site or pay to keep it running we need to know how much in the way of bandwidth it was using.

If it's under 30gb a month Ancile Hosting have a reseller package we could stick the site on for just over a tenner a month.

Was rob not including things like backups, and paying someone to do upgrades and things? The actual bandwidth part should be relatively OK.

God knows how many hits this place gets a month, but I suspect that it could do well with advertisers.

I can see the monthly bandwidth required being a bit less when all the old posts etc are no more as there will only be whats been posted from the day the new forums are launched for people to read etc. Whether or not as many people keep on using the new forums as much as they do here is beyond me but at first i think we'd get away with a much smaller amount of bandwidth than what this forum uses. £1 donation per year from a few people would probably sort it out.

Anyone with a vbulletin license could help set up some new forums the same as these, otherwise phpBB would be fine as it's free.

    Requirements would be:

    Decent amount of web space
    Decent amount of bandwidth
php and at least 1 mySQL database

I've set phpBB forums up before purely for educational purposes that I thought would aid me in my web designing career that i've now lost interest in :dunce: They are easy to set up though and would be fine for an alternative to this place for people to keep in touch and arrange trips to the nearest art museum or whatever it is we'll do once Promise has ended

Wow.. one thing computer-related where I might know something useful.
