It's fine. I was suprised when I went there .....I felt a lot safer on it than i do on the Metro system here !!!! For a start folk don't hang around on the platforms, you actually have to buy a ticket to get on the platform.

Take a walk through central park, do a boat trip around half of manhatten and up to the statue of liberty, have a night out down at Greenwich Village sorta area, go shopping! Go up any high rise building with a good view, go and see a top DJ play at one of the clubs, just wander around when its dark and soak up the atmosphere. Aaahh....I love New York its amazing! :D

i lived there for nearly 6 months...

other than the obvious choices, just walk around.. strange as it may sound, there isn't an awful lot to do in new york per se...

favourite areas are in the lower east side around orchard/houston and into the village... best advice is to get a metro card :)

hes right, but then its the same as anywhere you have to know where to look...

5th avenue area if you like bog standard, gap, bloomingdales / nike / ecko stuff.. think big department stores full of crap for the average burger munching american...

orchard st has the best shops on the island just south of houston st (SoHo)...and canal/laffayette all in a similar area (SoHo, NoHo and Little Italy)... also worth checking out is the MoMA shop on spring street...

aside of that theres a hell of a lot of small stores around NYU at washington square park nr. broadway... and also a puma concept store on w14th in the meatpacking district...

in a word, don't waste time on 5th avenue...
