Ethnics workers twice as likely to be jobless.

Ethnic minority workers are twice as likely to be out of work than the general population even though the gap is closing, according to "shocking" figures.

The pay of ethnic minority workers is also worse than their white counterparts.

The report will show Bangladeshi people earned an average of £235 a week compared with £376 for whites.

The figures will be revealed when the first annual report of a Government Task Force on ethnic minority employment is published.

Research will show that the employment rate for ethnic minorities is 59.4%, compared with 74.9% for the overall population.

The employment gap has narrowed by 1.4% over the past year, largely because of the number of ethnic minority women finding work.

Work minister Jane Kennedy said: "These statistics are shocking and that is why this cross-government taskforce has been created and is committed to bringing about change.

"But to achieve this we have to win the support of employers nationwide."

The task force will say that one of its key priorities over the next year will be to make sure the needs of ethnic minority communities are taken into account when skills programmes are being drawn up.

Some ethnics do not speak the language and therefore are unable to gain employment.

Also, in some cultures, it is still the man who is the bread winner and thus the women do not take up employment as a result.

To intimate that employers are institutionally racist or that people from minority ethnic backgrounds are lazy dole bludgers is a complete pile of shite...
