trance is dying, mainly because new trance is utter shit and much of it sounds samey and bland... the atmosphere in most of the clubs is no longer there or at least nothing compared to what it used to be and id think most people that have been clubbing for a fair few years would agree...

most trance clubs are failing to innovate, with exception namely godskitchen which seems to be varying its lineups...

having said this, when trance is done well its excellent, but 9/10 times its just plain gash... i wouldnt know more than 2 tunes in promise if i walked in now..

the only trance i like now is cheesy vocal trance, ie oceanlab/ 4 strings :D

having said all that, things change, a few years ago people said the whole indie scene was on its knees, now its the absolute opposite...

to be fair promise has done well to be around for four years when so many others have gone to the wall... but i cant help feeling how long trance like this can keep pulling the crowds for? ts a shame, but i think trance will remain in the doldrums for a good few years yet..

as for house.. the last 4 times ive been to shindig and the last time i went to nice they were either on capacity or near... id say house is still alive and kicking because it allows djs more flexibility whereas trance and hh is pretty much confined to a few different syles..

the likes of breaks, d+b and techno will always have a hardcore following pretty much no matter what...

I've never heard decent HH for a few years. Sundis at it's peak was awesome, bouncy HH was just plain fun! Dunno if it just went too hard & dirty and put a lot of people off. I like the dirty HH sound, but can't listen to it all night, just gets repetitititititititive.

"Hardstyle" is just piss poor, neither one thing or the other. Think it has blurred the boundary between HH and hard trance, the two styles kind of run into eachother now.

People like the Tidy Boys haven't helped either, their sets sounded like kiddie HH, turned HH into pop music almost.

I don't think you see the variety of DJs on tour there used to be, would love to see people like Nick Rafferty, Strange Dave etc playing more gigs. I think HH needs someone to grab it by the balls & take it back to what it was again instead of this piss poor watered down shite that you're hearing now... :(

People talk about trance being dead... but it seems people are only looking as far as the end of their noses, or the UK in that respect.

Trance and the whole other dance sub genres are HUGE in the rest of the world, and still growing fast ... And most importantly they have an eager, intelligent and enthusiastic market who are falling over themselves to get involved in it all. Case in point - take DJ's like John 00 Fleming who can barely pack in 400 clubbers into promise .... yet he can totally RAM OUT some of the most amazing clubs in Asia and the USA. The UK crowd as a whole just seems to know fuck all about who is good and who isnt any more.

Unfortunately the UK has been through the boom, bust and now we're in a recovery.

Much like with any industry - the scene in the south still shows no sign of suffering. Come to london and you'll see queues out the door and half a mile down the street to clubs like Fabric, The Cross and Turnmills. Unfortunatel the further north you go, so does the diversity in the kinds of people you get, and with that when that majority loses interest with something... everything crumbles.

I would say the future of clubbing in the UK should be a more low key, underground affair where clubs spend more time building their sound, residents and clientele, .... than they do booking superstar DJ's to try and appeal to 'johnny flyer spotter' ...

Anyways, im just another punter but thats my take on it anyways. I wouldnt say trance or anything was dead,....It's just had the dead wood die back a bit and needs a new wave of quality clubbers who turn up to support their club, as opposed to supporting Tie$to's wallet.

(yeah yeah its monday.... go easy on me)

i agree it's in a recovery period. the 'clubbers' have back lashed against the force-fed super club bullshit we've had to endure for the last 4 or 5 years - especially here in the UK... build it up when it's cool and underground - knock it as soon as it get commercial and uncool - it's they way we brits do things!

Trance, in it's forms, has been around since the conception of dance music - it just changes, sometimes popular and mainstream, others underground and quirky. back in the mid 90's house was on it's arse - compliation after compliation of shite and over exposure and trance was loved by all... things change!

Scotty i think this statement is aimed at you!!! Hehehehehe.

Still Mark i don't think it is what everyone wants but again not everyone can be pleased.

Derek, going back to the orignal statement clubbing is naff, up here at least. Again based on what I like its died up here. There are a few good nights down in Brum like @ Subway city, would be nice to have at least one HH line-up every other month up here.

I'd rather Promise be monthly + b/hols. Its more likely to fill the club and give everyone a better night - maybe it will build from there??? Hardwick/Lawrence/Halliwell is a must - good effort:)

Personally i think its due to the slight change in style. I found Promise was going a little too 'hard' for my liking, thankfully it all changed in the last 12 months.

Its been a great year in terms of the DJs we've had up here:

Above & Beyond, Thrillseekers, Gabriel & Dresden, Ferry returning
plus the regulars like Mr Hardwick. Its been a great year I think :)

As for the scene - its alive and kicking i reckon

Well said. The more people that go down the 'clubbing is dead route...', the more it will. Focus on the good side and get more people interested in it. I blame the music press for trying to kill the scene off - and threads like this don't help.:(
