    Africa?

I am thinking about going to Africa this summer, well for part of it, to help out, teaching, building houses and being generally around to inspire the people of the 3rd world.

After seeing how the rich kids lived in New York this summer gone, I wanna see how the not so rich live...imagine how rewarding!!

Anyway, got loadsa booklets and been on the internet looking at this for the past month or so, and really can't wait to do it!
Just wondering if you, or anybody you kno has done the same thing, amd recommends any good contacts/organisations/general expereinces? All the ones ive found have been for a full year, like working there on a gap year, im just thinking of a month or two.

    Thanks in advance peeps!
    Sam xx:)

Expect to be butchered, raped and then eaten.

It always pays to be prepared.

    What caught your eye?

    The AIDS epidemic?

The worst crime rates on planet earth?

The highest number of tourist robberies and murders on the planet?

    The huge unfriendly Muslim population?

Seeing Sasha & JZ rock space is rewarding, carrying pails of water across the jungle is not.

Best of luck though, say hello to Lenny.

Cape Town is very cosmopolitan huge hotels and excellent for shopping. Durban has a gorgeous beach. Defo a big difference from America if you are looking for something different.

Don't take any travel advice from this man ^^^^

Dumb ass went to India for a week and didn't even think to get a visa before he left  good long weekend in Goa eh pike?

crasher chick...would it not just be better to go on a 6 week holiday? It will probably cost about the same. The reason charities ask for a minimum time is because for anyone to be of any help they need to be there for enough time to settle in and contribute to a specific project. People will be giving up their time to show you the ropes etc so its just not worth it for a few weeks. We had a lot of people who wanted to come and work for our charity for just a month or two but it was stopped because they ended up being more of a hinderance than a help. Most of them just wanted to pat a few beggars on the head and hug a few orphans and go off on their jolly way feeling better about themselves. For your own benefit too, it takes months to adjust to a culture so different to your own so if you really want to do it I would wait until a time in your life where you have more time to give. It will really make all the difference to your own experience! :)

your welcome! If you did fancy India (I didn't fancy it before I went but I really reccomend it.) it's a great place for 6 weeks of travelling. In 6 weeks I covered a lot of south India and a few places in the north. While you are there I can arrange for you to visit the slums and projects I worked at and maybe you will get a feel for it and want to go back when you have a few months spare! If your heart is set on Africa though, another charity might be willing to show you their projects while you are there.
