conceptually - Oasis raises a good point (whether he realises or not :) ) .... but .....

.... Zoo's arent designed for humans to revel in the act of maiming and then horrifically murdering an outnumbered wild animal that is only trying to survive in this world - I've yet to see balloons and ice cream at a hunt, aswell as small children in pushchairs.

As much as Zoo's should be banned in the grand scheme of things as we strive for and kind of perfection in this world,... one of the stepping stones on the way to that destination is to abolish the gratuitous destruction of another animal in the name of 'fun'.

I'm not sure which is worse, a (relatively) short period of terror and pain, or a lifetime of abject misery in a bad zoo. Looking at it like that, I think poorly kept zoos are worse!

How about being chased by iraqi dissidents with packs of rabid dobermans for hours and hours. And then when you finally collapse from exhaustion - they break your back with a baseball bat then rip you to absolute shreds and paint your blood on a small boys face.

Can't say I have. Not since I've been grown up enuff to understand. I've been an active animal rights campaigner for years now. Please dont call me a hypocrite.

NB. The above DOES NOT mean I hate you in any way. Thank you. ;)

i think most do, like taking sick animals in 2 care for and that.
but now most animals r bread in the zoo's.

its still a bit cruel tho, coz the animals wnt like being locked up. but sumtyms cnt b helped.

Some do, some don't. The majority of zoos in say the US or UK are pretty good. However, try ones in some of the poorer countries, or even elsewhere in Europe.

The thing is, where do you draw the line? Most zoos, even bad ones, will keep animals in better conditions than battery chickens, for example, yet no-one (on here anyway) seems to be banging on about that. No, we'll just keep KFC and ban hunting, because that way it doesn't affect us directly.

I think alot of Zoo's do alot of Good.

In fact i saw one Zoo in Poland last year where the animals were being treat so well... even the Bears got up and were dancing for hours and hours... and hours. Proper loved up they were.

While its in the zoo the baboon wont have to hunt for its food as the zoo keepers will give it food. If it hurts itself a vet will be called rather then just heal itself. I would imagine at some point the zoo keepers will want it to shag another baboon so the zoo has another one, it wont have to go to swing branches looking for a bit of rumpy pumpy. It will also not become lion or tigers main course while in a zoo.

Reading back through a lot of the anti posts, a lot of people use the "public school lot" angle as an argument against hunting. Is this in fact what people have against it, and that it is more of a class issue than an animal rights one, or is it just that class is the easiest stone to throw?

What would people's opinions be if it was a traditionally working class pursuit? If there were moves to ban it then, would everyone then be arguing against the ban, saying that it was just the "public school lot" trying to tell the working class what they could or couldn't do?

The way its done is wrong... but anyone who knows anything about agriculture and the environment will tell you that without controls to species numbers, some will rise too high and wipe out entire parts of the food chain in areas aswell as destroying livelihoods of farmers.

That is just the beginning too... just because they look cute and furry doesn't mean they can't do serious damage.
