I can just picture these 'street parties'.

Some old woman called Ethil or Agatha from across the road baking cakes and making cups of tea, some big fat bloke with no t-shirt, covered in tattoos drinking lager tendering to a barbeque, while neighbours who normally hate each other try to muster up conversation and some wanker puts some 'party anthems' compilation or a Steps album and whining little kids piss everyone off. Then it'll start raining

What a heap of shit. If you tried to make anything good of it by banging out some Chris Liebing tracks you'd probably get lifted.

    Bah!

She is a diplomatic tool. A visit from the Queen is a very diplomatic thing. "look, we come in peace". I imagine a lot of leaders find it more interesting to tell the wife they met the Queen than "Tony Blair" or any of that rabble.

Also, the tourism the Royal Family brings is unbelievable. Tons of Americans come cos they have no history of their own, and it's a big money spinner.

Other than those two reasons, she is pretty useless, yes.

sorry but i totaly disagree wiv u there, the Queen is just a puppet!!!!! she is paid to sit there an look gud for our country, and it pisses me off that i fukkin pay her to do this!!!!!!!!!

she may hav to pass a few laws by signing the papers (basicly this is just to say that she agree's wiv this law), an if she dont sign it!!!!!!!!!! then the unseen puppet masters sign it on her behalf............bacsicaly she is a 'lets get paid to look pretty' scape goat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Queen brings in more money through tourism than is given to her by the taxpayer. I disagree with some of the minor royals getting money through the civil list as a lot of them don't do much for the country, but the Queen is worth it.

    Edited for typo.

Whilst I think the Queen can bring this country diplomatic benefits, this is in fact questionable.

The entire history behind the monarchy, as well as the incredible architecture of our landmarks and 'mystique' around royalty that brings in tourists would still be there if the Queen was alive or dead and to a good degree, if the royalty was there or not.

I hate the concept of royalty, but in a politically fragile age, I agree that a Queen is useful.
