PREMIERSHIP soccer star was arrested after a rape allegation, it was revealed last night.
The Newcastle United player was held by police following claims by a woman on Saturday night after United's 1-0 victory over rivals Sunderland.

The player is said to have been celebrating on the city's Quayside after a meal at a restaurant.Three men, including the player, were questioned after the woman made a complaint to detectives at Newcastle city centre police station. Police confirmed a player had been interviewed but said inquiries were ongoing.

A spokesman said: "An allegation of rape has been made and three people have been arrested and are currently helping with our inquiries." The player was not being named.

A club spokeswoman declined to comment, saying it would be "inappropriate"while police inquiries continued.


United boss Sir Bobby Robson was informed of the allegation.His squad trained as usual yesterday for Saturday's clash with Birmingham City.


A United star said: "The player trained as usual and I spoke with him. "He did not mention the investigation and nothing appeared to be amiss."
