    Which O/S is The Daddy?

So then, which is it to be?

I've gotta pump for UNIX, with a special mention to SCO Open Server 5. None of this point n click crap, any chappie can try his paw at it.

    Command driven man.

    Windows XP Pro

    you missed it off :O

while unix may indeed be good, its not exactly the most practical of OS's and isnt at all suited to everyday home use!

Does Novell have its own OS? I thought it just did that Netware thing!

Not too sure about Novell these days, but I used to support a fare few GP Clinical Systems that ran on it.

I was going to include it along with other versions of XP, but just decided to group them up.

I'm going to download Red Hat to set on on another HD - you used it before? Recomend it?

fuck me - Charles Babbage. I'm sure i've got mi old copy of Windows 3.1 on 5.14" floppys somewhere.

If you're not going for Windows 2000 (although in my experience a fast machine running XP is no bother) then try Linux.

Redhat runs off a graphical user interface as oppoed to the command line interface of unix!

So you dont need too much unix knowledge.

I think redhat is pretty cool but i stick to windows purely for wase of use and compatability issues!

    not really the difference....

both can be run by gui's.

both can also be driven by the command line....

for the home user there is no alternative to windows basically.

linux can be argued, but it is nothing more than something to dabble with for anyone who runs it at home. there is not enough commercial support for it to be justified as a serious competitor to windows in the home.

it is however a powerful OS, very powerful, and has the added advantage of being free (most distributions anyway).

best suited to servers/firewalls i would say.

na - there are various flavours of xp as there are with 2000.

theres a home version, a pro version etc etc...

basically xp is built on the nt/2000 kernel but with the multimedia niceness etc of windows me.

it looks nice and is lot more stable than the shite that runs on the 9x kernels,,,,,,

xp is the best microsoft os out by far imo...

The main difference if we're going to get techinial is that 2K & XP and based on 'Active Directory' structure similar to Novell. A Fast machine, running XP Pro with the most recent Service Pack is your best bet. Like people have said previously - there's no other real serious competitor. Where are you gunna get all your apps from if you're running Linux at home? unless you let Linux run the Windows packages, but that kida defeats the object of it...

    You heard of Torex?

Torex took over what was Alcotech, Ambridge, HMC, Medital, Peak Systems etc...

    Systems used to support were:

    MCS System 7 - Novell
    Premiere Text - UNIX
    GP Manager - UNIX
Premiere NT - erm...NT (only when I had to)

You use to work in this area?
