How do I link up several leptops for network play? A few of us at uni wanna link our laptops to play stuff like Worms Armageddon, but I'm not sure how to. Using the uni network seems out of the question cos it's all a bit of a fuck on, so either a direct wired connection between them all, or a wireless network of our own would be the best option. WHat will be the cheapest/most effective? Will crossover cables between them all do the job?
Get yourself an 8 port switch from eBay or ebuyer. Shouldn't cost you more than thirty quid and you can use standard patch leads to connect to it.
Cheers How does this look? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/8-Port-10-100...s_RL?hash=item3a50774bcc&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 If I buy that, stick it on the table downstairs and tell everyone to come and plug in their laptops via ethernet cable, will that be everything sorted? Network play for us all?
That reminds me, I've still got the software on the server here to host unreal tournament... Should get that properly set up
hubs = bad. If you've got lots of users exchanging traffic on a hub, eventually you'll get collisions and packet loss as everything one PC transmits will be received by the others. Switches are able to tell which ports they should be sending traffic down, minimising collisions. http://www.duxcw.com/faq/network/hubsw.htm
I ordered a Edimax 8 port switch from Amazon uisng prime so I'll be getting it in the morning UT seems to have issues on new systems though.. I remember it took me a good bit of fiddling on to get it working properly on vista/quad core but my m8 couldn't get it to work. It was in hyperspeed and the mouse controls seemed way off. Probably the best multiplayer game ever though Even beats COD4 online just cos of the speed and maps. 1on1 Liandri used to be amazing with zeroping instagib mods turned on.
you have to turn off the the other cores to stop the hyperspeed thing in older games go to task manager, right click on the game process and go to set affinity, switch it to single core and it should play at the correct speed obviously start the game first then alt+tab out of it to get to the task manager
That rings a bell.. it was probably what I ended up doing. My m8 still couldn't get it to run properly though. Hopefully the people in my flats will be ok on their laptops though.
I miss my uni days so much, I got a 2.1 in Duke Nukem on the network and a distinction in downloading the weekends porn cache from the image folders on a monday morning
How do I use this switch then? I've plugged in 2 laptops via ethernet cables and the network is showing as 'limited or no connectivity'. There were no instructions in the box.
Have a read of this: http://www.hotcomm.com/FAQ/FAQ_staticIPXP.asp You need to assign everyone an IP address. Use an address within the 192.168.1.* range and use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. For example, the first PC would use 192.168.1.1 and you can use any address up to 192.168.1.254.
