Totally class, the Gods ones over the years have been quality also, one in particular was advertising a 'Godskitchen Underground' night... had the gods angel drawn in the same font & train stations as the London Underground, clever as fuck & looked quality.
I woke the other morning to a few lovely PM's from Hummel calling me Mohammed & telling me to play my next gig in full robes?! HaHa
Oi Proudy, whats tha done to thread? This aint a plane full of snakes ya know! You gonna make it down to this pal?
Lol, sorry man the conversation seemed to go from bad to worse! Yeh I should be down for this, not playing & have no plans - no reason not to I guess!
For some stupid reason I have the date for this on my Myspace & in my Diary as the 5th.... yet have the artwork (stating the 10th) on my front page - What a F'n goon
Digital Society Interviews Med & Neil Bamford before DS Invitation @ MyHouse nighclub, Leeds Friday 10th July 1. You got together in 2008 to put together a track called One. What was it that made you work together? Neil - Well, me and Med and have known each other for a while as we lived a hundred yards apart and I started going clubbing with him in 2004. Due to my musical background, I had wrote music for the better part of my life but trance was still quite new to me. After creating some music that i thought complimented my preferred style of trance, myself and Med agreed to make a start on structuring what later would become, 'One'. Med - I remember Neil phoning me up late one evening telling me he had written a melody he wanted me to hear, at this stage i had already released a couple of previous tracks which had some small support and Neil was very interested in doing something together. The next day i went round to hear Neil play the keys live on a Roland RD170 through a Marshall guitar amp, i fell in love with it there and then. 2. You had a lot of support for the first track. Who were the key people pushing your sound and why do you think they picked it up? Med - The first person to give us some really positive feedback was Manuel Le Saux, at the time he was really making an impression online, most notably on Afterhours.fm as he was really pushing new uplifting sounds. I think the reason for its success was that it stood out amongst other tracks in DJ sets, which is definitely something we're very proud of. Neil - Manuel Le Saux, Lazurus, Aly & Fila, Sean Tyas and Ferry Corsten had done the track wonders. Being my first release i was following its progress on audojelly, trackitdown etc. and that was part of the experience. For me, It wasn't the fact that people were playing it online and buying it that made it successful, it was the fact that people were smashing it in clubs! 3. What were you doing before you got together and what brought you to trance music? Neil- When I first started learning how to play music I was listening to alot of s**t, and like most people who played guitar as a teenager, was in a band at the drop of a hat. I started going to my brothers trance night, Existence back in 2003 and fell in love with the atmosphere more over the music. Over time, after attending Gatecrasher in Sheffield, the music took its place in my head along with breathing, eating and sleeping. Med - Haha, i remember Existence, they were some funny times, there was something special about a little night put on by mates for the purpose of listening to your favorite music, loud, without parents knocking on the door, regardless of the attendance! I was really into Alternative music before i got into trance, i first went to Gatecrasher in 2002 as a couple of my friends asked if i'd be interested in going (not ever thinking i would agree!) and like many people, i never looked back! I could go on forever about how my first few visits to that place changed my outlook on music forever! 4. How do you go about putting your collaborations together? Are you both stuck in the studio or is the internet your friend? Med - The internet is very much our friend! With Neil moving to Leeds to attend Uni the net has become crutial in our making of music. Usually Neil will come up with a melody and a structure for it, at this stage i will take it over and build it up. We both have our strengths which makes the creative process so easy. Neil - The best way for me to put it would be that I write the music and Med makes it sound amazing! I feel lucky to have a producer as good as Med making my music come alive so that other people can share what i feel when I'm writing it. 5. How do you think your sound differs to the many, many other DJs / Producers out there? Neil - To be honest, Me and Med have feel that the sort of trance we produce, only a handful of producers are making. People that are currently influencing me musically are Daniel Kandi, Ferry Corsten and the very, very talented producer, Andy Blueman. I love my positive sounding, epic trance and these guys are pulling it off for me. Med - I appreciate there's recently been a massive influx of new producers coming onto the scene and i'm certainly not getting carried away as we're still very much a small fish in a big sea, however, i'm really into encapsulating melodies and there's alot of trance around that have very basic chord progressions and kind of plod along, its for some folk but not for me, which is why myself and Neil try to come up with something musically unique. 6. Do you think it’s important to be a DJ or a Producer first and why? Med - This question seems to be popping up more and more now, it depends why you're doing it. If you want to be a famous superstar DJ, you have to produce! I started writing music as i was fascinated by it, it was never to further my DJ career, the gigs since are a byproduct of how successful the music has become. There are many, many amazing DJs out there not being given the time of day as they haven't had releases which is a massive shame! Neil - I think it's important for people to have their own opinion on that one. My opinion is exactly that. I do have a lot of respect though for producers who do not DJ (Andy Blueman lol) as it shows that they are all about the music. Massive respect for these people! 7. What do you produce on and what key update / technology would make your work flow easier? Med - I'm currently using Logic 8 on a Mac, which was a massive step for me coming away from a PC (along with a hole in my pocket!). I never found the processing power on a PC to be enough, plus i'd spend all my time on msn which would distract me from working! I've purposly taken my Mac offline so its a dedicated workstation. Neil - I create the vast majority of my ideas live playing instruments then transpose it into MIDI by using anything from FLstudio and Reason, to Protools and Logic. I need to get a Mac big time though as I would like to actually finish one of my own tunes without the PC having a brain hemorrhage. 8. Give us a production tip or trick for a new producer. Neil - If you are stuck for writing melodies, don't just put random notes onto the computer and hope for the best. Find a tune that you think has an original sounding bass progression and blatantly steal it. With these notes on the bass line, you can then build a melody around it then use the notes to make pads. The music usually makes itself after a while but do not add to many complicated layers. Med - Compression, sidechain compression and EQ'ing is crutial. I went a long time not fully understanding this and after alot of reading and hair pulling its made a massive difference to the final outcome. You can use various synths, presets, samples etc. but if they're not all sitting with each other they'll sound horrible. 9. You’re headlining the DS Invitation room alongside some of the hottest talent from around the UK. What can you tell us about the music and the DJs people can expect to hear? Med - It's a great concept and with Digital Society's ever-growing fanbase it should be a great event. There are a few DJs playing who i've become very good friends with over the years and we have all progressed together, it'll be great playing alongside them, in some cases for the first time. From us you can expect our own productions plus the tunes that are influencing our music at the moment. Neil - I have to agree with Med. Since listening to trance and going clubbing, I've 'grown up' around these people and there are a fair few I'm very close to. The lineup is made up of some of the best up and coming DJs and producers in the UK and each have their own unique style and personalioty that they bring with them. I think it's about time we showed the 'Pro's', how it's done ;o) 10. Looking ahead how do you hope to develop your sound? Neil - I hope our sound continues to keep people enjoying nights out. I love the feeling of unison in a club when a DJ drops a tune like 'Galaxia' or 'Seven Cities;. To make tunes to the same effect is our goal. We are looking in to taking our set live within the next few years and have been looking at different ways we can do this using all the equipment we have and taking influence from dance music acts like 'The Prodigy' and trance acts such as Giuseppe Ottaviani'.
