yeah James I think things are pretty damn good in newcastle now, good variety of music/venues (just have to be creative) lots of good parties I think for the size of the city people are spoilt for choice, I've had some great nights out so far this year, off the top of my head, suono, cleer, klikklack, habit, the bloc parties to name a few and it looks like there's some great ones lined-up in the coming months :)

it bugs me when people knock what's available in our city, often peeps go to other cities and look at them through rose tinted glasses I reckon

Thats what i thought had been happening and the fact they are only allowed so many a year.

Basicaly to stop it being a rave up in the beer garden every weekend, the ones in 2000/2001 were crazy to be honest loads of charvers started turning up and whole road was mobbed out that why i have been surprised at the number allowed this year.

Pm me John though if you know anything different.

As all i hear is rumours at the moment.

It never works mate, I dont care to remember how much money I've lost over the years through sticking a coach on to an Event, footed the bill in trust & then dropped in the shit on the night or very last minute from handfulls of people, folk tuning their phones off, going awol or having to chase money up - Total nightmare.

Can remember going to them in 95-96 at the Tyne, and before that the main Sunday parties used to be at the Telegraph when they had a garden and not the extension/terrace they have now.

As for new clubs in Newcastle, the current ones cant get enough people in, why open another. Newcastle doesnt have the crowd's or scene's to fill a new club. Leeds is a totally diffrent proposition, they have had an all night party scene going back 30 years, mainly through having a large afro-carribean community and their blues parties and reggae do's.

Maybe the reality is that its just a very niche scene, with a few hundred 'proper' fans, and the rest are just there for the 'ride' while its cool/hip/young or involves dabbling with narcs.

Digital might be busy and popular for the sake that its already busy and popular and people want to say they have gone etc etc etc. Who cares if its actually actually quite shit if we are all being honest.

If they build it ... they might NOT come ;)

I agree to an extent that certain things need to be in place before any club night can successfully get on it's feet, maybe not everything you stated in you last post but never the less a decent Setup/Sound System is one of the main fundamentals in playing a part in any decent club night.

It still doesn't take away the fact that NUMEROUS club nights/promoters have tried & failed at a whole array of clubs around town, there simply isn't an underground clubbing community up here man?

I'll give you a perfect examlpe:

We ran Junior:G for over 18 months, we hosted some of the most cutting edge artists there was in it's genre, most of whom had never played the North East before. It was a whole new concept & whole new brand name we were trying to push. Irrespective of the brilliant line-up's staged we were lucky to exceed 2/300 people every month given the HUGE amount of work put in, we sold the club out maybe a hand full of times, if that.

Gods hosted another 1 off event at Digital the other month. The line-up wasnt that spectacularly different to whats been staged from different nights up here in the past/over the years yet you couldn't get moved, the whole club was stowed off! everyone seemingly turned out for the Brand the DJ's were playing under rather than the opposite. Dont get me wrong it was refreshing to see a full club going off for once & the atmosphere was brilliant, however it just cements the fact that theres no 'proper clubbers' (if you like) that turn out for the line-up's or music up here anymore?

there has been no strong challenge to digital so how can you say it would not work.

if there was a modern, medium sized purposely built/designed club with real focus on programming (promoters working together which each other on bookings, not putting similar genre nights on every week etc) promoted/branded correctly, excellent sound, lighting, staff, customer service, right location, etc etc then it would work.

to date we have not seen any of this. some clubs tick more boxes than others but you cannot say there is a real alternative that is a threat to digital.

in the early days of cosmic it looked promising but ultimately the club got a lot of things wrong and seemingly continues to do so..

the amount of people that turn out for certain nights at digital show there is a decent sized clubbing community.

there has never been a real, strong alternative for clubbers. we had meetings last year with someone who said they were going to give it a real shot and it sound very promising but it does not seem to be happening now.

I disagree with the majority of that mate as Junior:G ran for nearly 12 months without a single Trance night standing in it's path before Digital launched Evolve, yet we still struggled massively with numbers.

EDIT: Theres actually STILL no monthly Trance fixture in Newcastle, proving that there simply isn't an underground market to fill these spaces. However Gods, GG, Gatecrasher can come up with their brand name after having no regular input into the Cities scene or any regular fixtures & sell out a club the size of Digital & it's 3 rooms.
