I dont think being able to 'just' DJ these days is enough to get you the recognition that this thread is about, IF IF IF thats what your about. Production, Promotion, Marketing etc etc etc all seem to be the icing on the cake that most people cant muster up or be arsed to do that take you from being good enough to pick music, mix it together (and repeat) ..... all the way to someone who your mates want to bum and say they know you.
i dont think these djs are under-rated? i dont think any of the other local djs mentioned in this thread are either as they all seem to be doing well and getting plenty of gigs and always get a positive response. i think if people keep doing what they do well and make tracks (which i see proudys doing and doing really well) then as a wise man once said, the cream always rises to the top. brid is right also, full package needed to make a success and a career out of this business these days. cant get big gigs without big label support and productions and cant really live on being a producer without playing gigs to pay the rent. anyhow... good luck to all!
in that respect then i reckon che armstrong, quality prog dj, owner of a successful and well recognised label, runs an established underground night, has some decent remixes/productions under his belt..
.... it just goes to prove then doesnt it - Are DJ's 'under rated' or are they just in a different league to 'stars'. Getting to the big time these days seems to be alot about networking and knowing how to market yourself to create the 'buzz'..... I doubt most of the DJ's that people say are under-rated could actually be arsed with that. People turn up in their thousands to worship clubbing 'brands' be it DJ's or the logo's or image about them ... I've lost count of the number of times i've been to see Sasha in the past few years only to actually spend less than an hour on the dance floor and spent most of it commenting how stupidly busy its been. Same with newcastle - Digital is always busy regardless of how universally dissapointing it is ... But we all turn up none the less
similar question.....but is there a difference between under rated dj's and relativley new dj's that havnt 'made it' yet? I agree that most of the locals mentioned so far arnt necessarily under rated, their all talented and are regulars around the north east and further, they each have their fans and mates that will follow them to gigs and go out just to see them play. i think its more they havnt been on the scene long enough or been lucky enough to get a break that puts them onto the bigger scene. Unless you've caught a very lucky break or got some fuckin awesome talent/thing that separates you form the rest, it could take years of work before your 'rated'
I think there are a great many talented locals that given the right 'break' could go a long way. But unfortunately it is still very much a case of 'who you know', and sometimes sadly 'how many tickets can you sell? or how many friends can you guarantee to bring down?' I do think over the next 12 months or so we will see a shift in 'big name' bookings, as to be honest the fee's that have been charged over the past few years, are increasingly becoming un-realistic for a lot of nights. With promo costs, hire fees, and everything else that goes into it, it simply isn't becoming financially viable to even break even, unless you are making money from the bar. So because of this, I think we'll see more local and 'underrated d.j's getting the respect they deserve on the local scene, because more and nights will need them!
couldnt agree more with that comment. it seems if a promoter books me to play thats the first thing they ask. One in newcastle even showed an interest after a mate recommended me and he had never heard of me, seen me play or even knew what style i played. No mention of a demo or anything. All he was interested in was ''how many mates is he guna bring?'' to be honest i'd rather promoters knew me for being able to mix, i understand they need the numbers but there are limits! If people are guna book DJ's wothout even knowing if they can play that takes the piss a bit!
