Best way, gets right on my wick how so many ENGLISH people go out & get lashed on St. Patricks Day but the people that are planning on going out & getting mapped today are considered as scum.

I shall certainly be celebrating. I'm off work anyway, so it'd be rude not to have an early start. :D

but why celebrate it? it's a saint's day - are you religious? how many going out to get lashed are practicing christians or CofE.

st. paddy's days was always more celebrated because of the religious nature of ireland - it's just been hijacked by Guinness and punted to the english.

i'm all for a 'England is Mint' day as a national holiday

Apparently, St. Peter is actually England's real patron saint.

St. George was relegated to the position of 'national protector' by the Pope in 1893.

That's neither here nor there now these days though. Figured I would just throw that in for an interesting fact.

I do think it should be a public holiday though and I am not even religious - make it synonomous with national pride to give us non-believers a free day too. Most of the people in my office didn't realise it was today until I educated them.

The Irish get St. Patrick's day off. Why can't we get the 23rd off to celebrate our seemingly dwindling sense of national identity?

are you religious? do you give/receive presents at Christmas? do you get drunk at Christmas? do you have to be religious to celebrate St George's Day?

so you're just using it as excuse to get drunk?

i celebrate christmas - yes, but modern christmas is hardly anything to do with religion, plus the date was original a pagan festival of winter.

The BNP have been outside of work( monument in Newcastle) this morning going wild. Then some protesters(immigrants) appeared with banners. So they've been kicking right off with each other, police all over. The BNP were chanting 'scum, scum' at the immigrants.
    Absolutely crackers!

is there anything wrong with that?

nothing at all, i wish there was a proper day to do it on, rather than copying the tatty eaters over the pond and using as an excuse as to why we're treat so badly.

st. george is the patron saint of england - do you count your nationality as english?
