Donnie Darko Just re-watched this for a third/forth time, and even though i'm understanding many of the main priciples of what the film is about, not to mention the time travel/chaos theory elements within it - i still cant quite get the last part of it. why cruel fiction, why! from my understanding now, there was a new or parralell universe put in place, it's just when you see the 'actual' frank at the end rubbing his eye is what confuses me. at what time did these universes switch? and what had happend during this time through the film? argh.
There's a pretty good explanation of the film here: http://www.cesspit.net/drupal/node/1708 Slightly different take to a lot of the explanations around but if you havea read ad watch the movie, it does seem to fit (mostly)
Donnie is the centre of it all, the 'living receiver'. Once the time line corrects itself people CLOSE to the receiver still have vague memories of what happened in the alternative timeline - hence why donnie's mum and that lass seemed to think they knew each other right at the end. same with frank, he feels like his eye should hurt for some reason. it's all pretty well explained in that ficitional book "The Philosophy of Time Travel" explained here : http://www.translatum.gr/forum/index.php/topic,1712.0.html OR on the donnie darko website - if u can work thru it all. it's good fun the pages of the book : http://ruinedeye.com/cd/time1.htm
Yeah as MOS said "The Philosophy of Time Travel" pretty much explains the film, and that books explanation is from Richard Kelly himself. It's perfect, my favourite film of all time.
Just settling down to watch this in HD now. Lucy reckons i've seen it and been in my dvd's for ages but cannot remember it.
watch it first a couple of times ness before reading any of the above spoilers, see what u think of it
watch it again, it may seem totally random - but that whats good about it. pieces will fal into place....
http://www.donniedarkofilm.com/ Bit head battering but worth a try Awesome film, in my top ten of all time. Love Frank The Rabbit
i think the 'vague memories close to the reciever' bit sort of fills the gap in my ignorance, however should a film really need a fictional text just to explain the overall narrative?! even then though, it was fun working it all out - however wierd it is ps. i briskly read through the philosphy of time travel and still couldent come to a conclusion the other day, i've been mulling it over all day at work
the directors cut has the book featured in it more prominently, while the normal version is apparently 'more mysterious' only kelly know really what the deal is
