Quote lol at your naivity. Do you think promoters at the heads of these nights that have been running these nights for years in some cases over a decade don't have loyal friendships with the agents of the biggest artists. People go with who they & know who they respect. As long as these artists have a good club to play in with comparable capacity and soundsystem there will be no exodus of big names to newly established national promoters in this city. National promoters will get ZERO support & ZERO help. They'll have ripped their posters down all over this city and their nights will be picketed. The hardcore crowds that go to shindig, turbulence and wax on will never accept nights like say Metropolis or Hed Kandi. This kind of action ended foundation and it'll end digital as an underground venue.

Newcastle has a small but very loyal clubbing crowd - how many people do you think are out clubbing on a weekend? 1 to 2 thousand maybe? word gets around.

They probably had no idea the level of support for these nights and never expected this backlash

all digital is is a space. nothing more. and a not very well loved space at that. the promoters ARE the club. without them it's nothing. Good promoters make it look easy but they put their heart and soul into what they do and that is why they are successful.

If Digital think that all they need is big names to pull a crowd they’re quite naïve. HiFi thought exactly the same – Ian Brown, Sasha & Digweed, Van Buuren, Lawler etc etc.. – and went ahead and put their event on the day before Shindig @ Baltic, yet they still only pulled about 500 more clubbers into a space that could accommodate for about 20,000. Sure this was on a completely different level to a circa 3000 capacity Baltic Centre, but it kind of proved that maybe just the big names, without respected local promoters, with a dedication to the scene and a loyal following who they understand and relate to, can’t help a night/event succeed up here on their own. I remember speaking to Scoobz about it on here and I actually went to both and, although I enjoyed HiFi, it just couldn’t match Shindig in terms of filling the space they had to capacity. Lack of commitment/organisation/dedication when it came to actually promoting it probably didn’t help the organisers, but isn’t that what Utopian will lack when all they are in it if for is the ££££? Maybe a few one-off events might do well in the short term? But becoming consistent at filling such a venue, I can't see it tbf!!!

I for one am completely excited at the prospect of a new venue for the best nights we have up here. Like MoS and a few others have said, this is one of the most exciting things to happen up here for a long time.

Shindig, Wax: On (if they’ve left???), Turbulence, Evolve and Stonelove blatantly have the support to make this succeed too

Oh, and for anyone that gives a shit (or not) Digital are 16th in this years DJ Mag Top 100 clubs.

It'll be interesting to see where they are this time next year without the nights that helped it get there.

The thing is aswell even if digital does go down the commercial road I don't think it could compete with the likes of sea etc? Its completely out of the way of any of the warm up bars for there and sea has its total regulars (plus its prob a better set out etc) ...I really dunno what road they could take for a sat tbh.

    spot on.

look at how many people say they like foundation as a venue, yet all the good will in the world didn't save that venue.

People follow the nights and the music they enjoy and don't follow the venue. If they did, foundation would never have been in business and digital would have never got off the ground (as no doubt everyone would still be at WHQ ;)).

Funny seeing joe's reply in this thread, because I'm sure I remember joe arguing that feedback, soul heaven and funky buddha were going to save foundation and they never did (I could be wrong and it might have been someone else arguing that, I can't be arsed to check).

Even with its sound system, digital is nothing without a credible line up of nights, and that is something they don't have. Without that, any specialist music venue would be doomed. And I can't see them lasting long.

At least foundation had deakin, without the tokyo peeps utopian are just a bunch of ex-ultimate leisure directors. They got into this to provide financial backing and make money, and nothing more.

Foundation went because the building was destined to be residentialised and digital sealed it's fate.

UL are hardly going to lie back and let you lot nail them from behind, they have one of the plushest/largest venues in the North East, a great reputation and years of industry experience.

Don't give me all the club loyalty bollocks, the newcastle crowd is as fickle as anyother... if big nights take residency at digital they'll jump ship faster than kate winslett off the titanic.

Was in digital last night, talked to various staff about the current predicament, apparently they are all sworn to secrecy?!but one of the bar staff reckoned theres big things planned in next month, so i'm sure we haven't seen last of digital like...he seemed genuine that theres going to be some big event happening?it still is the best venue in town with the right dj's on..

Scott & Scooby probably have a contacts book as big as anyone in dance music means that whoever takes them on is pretty much destined to fail. That fact that Digital Room 1 is awful wont help these new promoters either.

If I was Digitals owners I wouldnt even bother competing. They are obviously excellent in the 'commercial' market so should stick to what they know.

They should make Digital Room 1 a seperate club and fill it full of Top 40 music and make the Other Rooms downstairs a VIP room etc.

Then rebrand the Upstairs of Digital + upstairs in Other Rooms as a new club where it can be used as a DanceMusic/Band venue.

Might need to expand the bogs upstairs in the Other Rooms but im sure thats possible with the right Irish contacts.
