Then get a 3.5" HDD Media Player :)

I just got that one yesterday and so far it's great. I put my old 40GB HDD in and it plays my films perfectly. No need to convert or burn anything, just connect the box to your pc with a usb cable, then disconnect and put it back next to your tv and watch as many films as you like :)

The interface/remote control isn't the best but it's like that with most budget players you get and it's not really a problem for me. You can get more expensive options from Amazon: [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Freecom-Network-MediaPlayer-Drive-Included/dp/B000B5U3YM/ref=pd_sbs_ce?ie=UTF8&qid=1201789402&sr=8-13]Like this, this and Freecom Network MediaPlayer Drive-in Kit: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41jkJrS6BrL.@@AMEPARAM@@41jkJrS6BrL[/ame].

Best buy for <£35 this year for me!

I like the portability of this though. It's the size of a VHS box and can take up to a 500GB hdd. Saves me having to burn anything to disk next time I want to watch a film round my m8's.

I just went for the cheapest option as I originally only needed some sort of IDE enclosure so I could get some files off my old hdd and put them on my new PC. That was gonna cost about £15 so I figured I may as well pay double to get a media player :p

I dunno how long mine will last but atm I'm happy. Probably best going for a branded, more expensive version in the long run though. This was just a trial to see just how compatible it was :)

Not with the one I have. There's cables to connect it to either the tv or the monitor though if that's any use. It's pretty simple to use, you can leave whatever cables you're using in the tv and leave the usb cable in the pc.. just transfer the box between the two like a usb key. Only downside is it uses a power cable too but if you have a spare kicking around you could leave those in the tv/pc too I guess.

I haven't read that link properly, but make sure it definitely plays AVI's. I have a divx dvd player with memory card slots etc but for some reason it will only read image files :(

Tbh, the dvd format for me is almost none existent now. Everything about it is just annoying.. huge file size, takes ages to convert/burn, uses up 1 disk per film, gets scratched and if (god forbid) you buy a retail dvd you're plagued with unwanted ads or notices before you get a chance to even watch the film.

Does anyone buy dvds when their still recent releases any more? The only time I buy stuff on dvd is if I happen to see some shit old film I haven't seen for a few years on sale somewhere. And even then that's only if it catches my eye, I don't go looking for them.

Can't see why anyone would pay £15-20 for a new release.

I'd only consider buying my favourite films, or box sets of a series but mainly because it's nice to have the retail packaging..

I find it ironic when you get a retail dvd and you get that video warning you not to buy pirated dvd's because the experience isn't as good as the retail. What they fail to mention is that pirate dvd's don't have fucking annoying pirate warnings on them!

I buy about 3 DVDs a month but they're all the 3-5 quid ones from hmv website. Usually old films and stuff. I'd never pay over a tenner for a DVD unless it was a gift for someone else.

Get a chipped xbox off ebay with Xbox Media Centre then stream from your pc, it also allows you to play xbox games online through xlink kai and other random stuff like emulators, browse youtube etc etc.
