overseas players in premiership I think that this issue needs adressing now. Foreign players do bring a lot to our league ie fabregas, essien alonso and torres. But I would limit the amount of overseas players to five per starting line up. Looking at the England line up there is not one young, exciting, world class player coming through. Post Rooney I am struggling to think of one player that looks like a world beater. We are relying on the old familiar faces like beckham, owen and campbell. What do other people thinnk???
I think fuck the national team, I'd rather see the good matches in the premier league week in week out, even before the massive influx of foreign players England werent a massive force, we've won fuck all since 66 and limiting the ammount of foreigners wont change that imo
Re: overseas players in premiership i think richards is goin to be one of the best defenders around in years to come !
Ashley Young, Agbonlahor, and James Vaughn are all highly rated forwards and could come through, there will be other decent kids at other clubs... our u-21's and below are doing pretty well at the mo. The cream will always rise and good English kids will always be around, but I would agree a quota could be beneficial, even if it starts off with just 1 or 2 per team. However it's European law that is the problem... it will have to be thougt through very carefully. France overhauled their youth training schemes and look what that brought them, that is the way we should do it as so many English players are technically inferior and poor in possession and at keeping the ball. If we succeed then English kids will be keeping out foreigners in their own right.
Re: overseas players in premiership Micah Richards? Ashley Young and Walcott arent far away from the team I'd love to see a team like this Robbo Cole Terry Rio Richards Hargreaves Barry Gerrard/Lampard Young Rooney Walcott
Re: Re: overseas players in premiership Not bad apart from that gaping black hole at the back called Robbo!
I dont see how its magically going to make a load of amazing young English players spring from no-where? Surely playing with and against top european players every week should make them want to raise their game and fight for places in teams. All it would do is make the Premiership shit, not make the England team amazing. I think it'd be better to impose a cap on foreigners in the Championship downwards.
who gives a shit bout the national team, ifenglish players worked as hard as foreigners and were actually good enough they'd get in the team in the first place, why drop the standards of the league?
also you see alot of premiership teams scouting and bringing in very young players from abroad who are skillfull, how many young english players do you see scouted and gracing serie a and the spanish league? just goes to show we don't have the output of quality players.
I don't think we need a quota system. Whoever's best should play at the end of the day. But there's a lot of shit foreign players being bought in the Premiership, and these are taking the places which could be filled by young English players. Clubs nowadays buy in players from abroad just because they have the money to do so. They need to be more careful of the foreign players they buy.
There are plenty of English players of different qualities older and younger who could cope in Serie A and La Liga, it's just the market price of an average player in England is significantly higher than those in Italy and Spain. Like i said earlier, the main issue with English youngsters is technique, which can be taught at an early age as other countries prove (e.g. Brazil with futebol de salao - a game with a smaller heavier ball so no heading/long balls but lots of control and quick passing, skills and movement)... however in this country even young kids are taught to play to win and get results; with less emphasis on learning technique - the coaching needs overhauling. There will always be some fantastic English players coming through, but Peter is right, there is not the output... other countries have more strength in depth to choose from, as football is a squad game now we suffer from having inadequate replacements.
English players dont play abroad for a few reasons: English football is rich & not just the Premier League but the Championship, which is the the sixth richest division in the world. Player wages in the UK are sky high. Also most English people are homers and have unwillingness to adapt to foreign surroundings. The likes of Unsworth, Beauchamp (sp) couldn't hack living in other parts of the UK I think we are maybe building up foreign players a bit much in this thread. Smog - Regarding European Employment law I wouldnt mind seeing a test case by a league where the league has said to clubs "You can employ as many non-domestic players as you want, you can have as many as sub as you want but you can only 5 on the pitch at one time". I dont wish to debate this point I am merely just putting it out there.
The French U21 team which is made up of lads mainlu 21 or 22 has just got beat 4-2 off the Sheepshaggers U21 which is made of a load of teenagers as the taff seniors have 8 players who could play the U21s.
Spence/ Smog, youse both have a point but i don't think it's anything to do with money and wanting to stay here, if an english player was decent and a team from seria a wanted to sign them i think they'd choose to play their over playing in the championship anyday.
Why buy a English fella who is on 5K or more a week or in the Championship when you get 5 African kids or a Eastern European international for about the same weekly wage.
Or why get an english player in the first place when one of those african kids will have been brought up with more skill anyhow?
