    Britain at the moment

    is well offside

    Weather is absolute shite
People getting themselves into unpayable debts in order to live
    Teenagers being absolute dicks
Being beaten by a lacklustre Germany

Im struggling to find the Great at the moment....

House prices. While I have done well out of the house I bought in Newcastle (which is currently on the market), it is going to cost us around £350k to buy a two bedroomed place with a garden in a not-great-but-not-awful, not-too-far-out area of London.

We have talked about it, but I'd probably have to take at least a 25% pay cut, and I reckon my gf would be on half what she earns here. :(

I think he may have been refering to the soaring house prices pricing people into un-repayable debt to get on to the housing ladder etc, but there are a lot of people who get into debt for stupid things like that. i suppose that could be due to a lack of sense which in turn could be due to the education system failing

Theres no such thing as the 'housing ladder' ..... that was a term coined in the 70's and 80's where inflation was making your wages rise at a rate that meant you could remortgage 5-10 years down the line and borrow more money to be able to buy a better house.

These days your a lucky man/woman if you can get a good pay raise on a non graduate/regular job .... especially when you have a few billion people in the world all willing to work harder for less money.

    Rent and be happy ;)

It's not like anyone has to buy though is it?

If someone buys knowing that they won't be able to afford it, then it's their own fault. They're not getting forced into it.

True, but why should someone with a decent job and income have to pay rent into someone elses pocket and get no return in later life?

They could save up first or buy somewhere they can actually afford.

    ok fair enough.

but im sure on even with a high street mortgage company you end up paying back about double what you borrow. And who can afford to buy a house outright?
