How much would I have to spend to be able to play the newest games for a year or two? I haven't been able to play PC games for a good few years now and the PS2 doesn't hack it really. I've never enjoyed consoles as much as PC's so it wouldn't make much sense to get a Ps3. I'm planning on buying a new bike for about £300 but then I thought, if I could find somewhere that offers finance on a new pc I'd get more enjoyment out of that, since I already have a bike that would cope with repair. Anyone got any price ranges or places to look? Places that offer good finance deals over ~12months? Cheers
get a dell xps theyre quite cheap and you should be able to get a decent one cheaper than most places, your gonna need somet like an 8800 if you wanna be playing games for the next 2 years, 2 gig ram and a core 2 duo should surfice however theres new pentiums coming and the quadcore ones are dropping in price (even though nothing uses quad cores) id wait until november or somet, i alwys build me own pcs tho so i know what im getting meself into, but when you go all out on nice gear it costs alot
I built the one I'm using now a good few years ago and although I thought I was doing myself a favor at the time, it's proven to be the biggest pain in the arsehole. If one thing breaks you have to search through receipts for details to find out where you got it from.. if it's outside of the warranty with the vendor then you have to go through the manufacturer which in the case of my Radeon 9700, was located in Germany so I was gonna have to package and send it myself, paying all costs, pay a £30 admin fee, then pay for the return. Other things have just been replaced to avoid the trouble so from now on I'm sticking to a complete system bought from a trustworthy name such as Dell It's also not worth the stress of plugging everything together only to see fuck all happen when you press the power button I had that problem for most of the first day that I tried to get this lump working. I suppose that's another problem with buying seperate parts.. although some hardware is great when using it, the instruction manuals can be a little bit shit.
I would buy the following pentium core2duo e4300 asus p5ne-sli 2gb crucial ballistix pc5300 geforce 8800gts thats what i bought recently for about 350 quid... and all games run mint now. (bare in mind i overclocked the 4300 to 3ghz too!)
as part of a new system, or an upgrade? As i say, I'm really not convinced that building stuff yourself if worth it if things do happen to go tits up.. then again I like the sound of £350 Where did you get it from? I was gonna say I don't really need a new monitor.. but i do. It's a huge 19" CRT and I've just noticed the right side of the screen is a bit flickery and changing the refresh rates doesnt really help anymore. PC's
I just checked a site that offers 12 months interest free credit for this (spec variable if need be): INTEL® Core 2 Duo E6420 (2 X 2.13GHz) 1066MHz FSB/4MB L2 Cache 2048 MB CORSAIR DDR2 667MHz - LIFETIME WARRANTY! Absolutely build it yourself. You've got a far better chance whatever your budget of affording the components you'll need for games in a year or two that way. It'll take you an afternoon tops to build.
and sending bits back when they go wrong!?!?!?! - i've never had that happen. i had a HD fail once... but hey. hhmm.... i can feel a plethora of threads appearing in the techy section ITS THE MAN WITH THE AVERSION TO TECHNOLOGY
You know what I'm like. I blew 3 of my 5 speakers and eventually snapped the volume control off them so I couldn't power them on, broke my radeon, had to get a new psu and a few cd-rw drives. I can't help thinking that the reason i've had so many shit ups with this pc is because I built it. If things did go wrong i had no technical helpline to phone and blame for it An yeah.. when things do go wrong and you're told you have to send your graphics card off to germany things start getting a bit depressing. I'll feel more comfortable knowing that I've bought the whole pc, pre-built from the same vendor even if it does cost me a bit. The way I see it is I saved money building this one and ended up worse off in the end.
do not get a nvidia 8800gts 320mb vesion they wont cut in for new games no before long, they jsut dont have the ram, ive got the 640mb version tweaked and its shit hot and better value for money because i wont need to replace the hewer for ages.
hmm.. I just got news from my friend in Africa last night that is is planning on coming over for global so it looks like things will have to go on hold for a bit. fuck lol At least I could wait till november for the price cuts tho
Just get a PS3 if you're gonna spend that sort of money. Can use any usb keyboard & mouse for the games- only 400 quid and there's an official linux for it now too if you want to use it for a PC
From experience, you just can't beat PC's for gaming though. I also need a new pc cos this one is getting slower and slower..
Well I'm set on buying a new pc sometime soon (again) cos I'm down to 256mb ram which is causing a load of problems atm. After re-reading this thread I have a bit of an idea what to aim for. However, can anyone confirm how accurate keyboard/mouse use on ps3 games is? I was reading about an adaptor for the xbox which allowed the use of a mouse but since games are set up for controller use officially, the x-y axis and the speeds in which you turn/move are all limited to what is optimistic for control pad use so you don't get a very good 'pc experience'. I'd imagine this is the same for the PS3 unless they've officially supported mouse use and incorporated some sort of on/off option in games.
I've not tried th keyboard / mouse in games but i just use a standard usb wireless combo thingy and it controls the menus etc in PS3 browser with no lag and the same for linux- I think the first game to use keyboard / mouse is going to be UT 2007 from what I read. It'll be down to the devs that add the option to their games. The support is standard for any keyb / mouse in the PS3 OS
They are very accurate, i own the PS3 mouse & keyboard along with the official PS3 Linux & it's very good stuff indeed
I didn't mean 'accurate' actually What I was supposed to ask was how similar is it to a pc mouse setup? ie, can you change the mouse speed so that movement in say, a fps can be configured to high or low sensitivity? What was apparently happening on the xbox was a default turning speed that was limited to what was optimistic for control pad play and 'moving the mouse quickly' to turn faster than normal was a no no since it wouldn't be possible to determine such movement with an analogue stick. I loved playing unreal Tournament on the PC but part of being good at it came from having the ability to turn 180 degrees in a split second so I wouldn't consider getting a PS3 for the new UT unless that was an option. I probably sound like i'm being really anal about nerdy things now
