to a normal video,no its encrypted
to sky plus, yes. It only charges you once you've watched it. i.e if you set sky plus to record a box office film in the middle of the night, you would only be charged if you watched it. If you deleted it without watching it then it wouldnt cost diddly.

my mums friends son wants to watch Wrestlemania so said i'd look into it.

I havent got a clue how to be honest.

We've got 3 dvd recorders, one in my room, 1 downstairs and one in my mum and dads room.

Only mine and the one down stairs work, the one in my mums room just wont record off box office when we try it but thats a different recorder to the other two so maybe its the recorder  they all work with sky but only the two with box office stuff.

You could always try sky plus it then try it from there, then at least its to the plus box and if it doesnt record to dvd you havent recorded nothing.

My Sony DVDRecorder has protection stuff built in thats meant to 'detect' encrypted stuff.
