Hague on BBC Newsnight: social networking will lead to other 'political movements for change, not just in the Arab world'

looks like the system is getting worried by the fact we can contact each other instantly.. it is pretty dangerous to THEM... imagine if a message was sent out to turn your engine off if your on a motorway in protest agaisnt fuel prices... and people acted on it.

Fucking takin the piss now facebook aint they?, everything u say or have said on chat is now stored as an email in ur inbox & archived. I thought having every move you've ever made able to be downloaded in a zip file from account settings was bad now this. Deactivating this soon it's just beyond a joke now.

The mobilisation of Egyptians against Mubarek was done with people using Twitter & Facebook as main way to contact each other & spread the word, that is why Mubba took the net down a few times. Fucking Hague on the pulse.......

That article goes on about the 'Free Internet'.....the internets never been free and we've never had the right to true freedom of speech and never will as it will always be controlled or monitored by somebody with a hidden agenda.

Whether we like it or not we've pretty much all now got internet history which i'm sure they could trace back as far and wide as they needed to should it be needed as evidence against us in any matter.

I very much doubt deleting your facebook profile would infact mean the complete and utter loss of that information.... it'll be hidden somewhere or stored by higher powers without doubt.

The internet by it's very nature is decentralised. Even the US (who technically hold all the controls regarding it's use) aren't completely in control. The information on the internet re-routes its way round blocks, controls, and restrictions. If your country blocks a site, it's usually extremely easy to find a way round it. Even in China, where everything is restricted and controlled, it's not impossible to find ways to access sites blocked by the authorities.

If you want a simple example of this - look at all the filesharing sites that the RIAA, MPAA, PRS, BPL and others try to get shut down on a regular basis - ten more always pop up to take their place. This has been going on since the days of napster (kazaa, limewire, suprnova, pirate bay etc). Even if the US did exert far more control over the internet than they currently do, you'd find that many companies would just cut them out of the loop and set up their own equivalent internetwork.

As for tracing/records/auditing, if you know what you're doing it's extremely easy to conceal yourself from the authorities and those who record your activities. Use of proxy systems like TOR as well as anonymizers can make you next to impossible to trace.

Yeah i mean i understand what your both saying but this new inbox thing is just the tip of the ice berg, what else is will be visible to your friends soon. I don't want to see what emails i've sent to people over the last few years as some aint very nice & i'm sure the people i've exchanged them with won't want to see them again either, but soon will lol. (If any ones wondering what i'm on about, wait till you've had the new update  )

Think about it this way, if your network provider gave you the tools to listen to every phone convo you ever had would people be happy?, just because it's "Facebook" doesn't make this any diff, i've noticed a shit load of people removing their account due to this now, they may have something to hide i don't know

For some reason nothing seems to be stored before may 2009 but i made my account in 2007, so they weren't storing all your data at one point.

So for these reasons i'll be deleting my account once i've saved most of the pics i no longer have on my HD & if i'm honest, i'll not miss it.

Your info was always stored with facebook. You post a message, write something on your wall, upload a photo - it all gets fed into a database which facebook uses to store content. You click "view my profile" or "view albums" and it all gets pulled back from that database. Why its news to people now is beyond me.

It's the way that most sites work (myspace, amazon, BBC, CNN, etc). This site is exactly the same - all of your posts and private messages are stored in a MySQL database on the site server. That also includes IP address information for when/where posts were made, email addresses, time last logged in etc.

All facebook have done is write a tool that allows you to download all of that information from their database. The tool is a good thing to be honest - it gives you control of that data to do what you will (including pulling it all out of facebook before you disable your account). It's probably in response to a recent change in German law, which allows people to request that their profile information be deleted from any site or social network.

Conway i know everythings been saved from the start, i downloaded a file last year with all my shit in it, but what they don't tell u is that everything you've ever wrote will be just there for u and the other person to read. For e.g, i've said a few nasty things about an ex which was normal at the time lol but we get on well now as it's "allll in the past". Well not fucking now it isn't, it's all right there in her inbox!. Daft shit like that.

To be fair Rory, if you'd sent those messages by email she'd still have her copies of them even if you deactivated your email account ;)
