    Windows XP Service pack II

A major update to the Windows XP operating system will be available to download from August, two months later than originally expected.
The update, called Service Pack 2, is intended to make the operating system from Microsoft much more secure.

The company, based in Redmond, US, said it needed extra time to ensure the proposed software changes were stable.

Analysts have described the upgrade as the most significant revision of Windows XP since its launch in 2001.

    CHANGES DUE IN SP2
    Pop-up ads blocked
    Revamped firewall on by default
Outlook Express, Internet Explorer and Windows Messenger to carry warning about attachments
    Origins of downloaded files logged
Web graphics in e-mail no longer loaded by default
    Some spyware blocked
Users regularly reminded about Windows updates
Windows Messenger Service turned off by default
    -===================================-

I might even upgrade from Windows Millennium at last if this sorts out XP for good.

I never upgrade my op sys until at least the sp2 release. Until then you are basically running a beta version for Microsoft!

I don't see why I should upgrade my tweaked to perfection Windows Millennium for a bug ridden virus magnet like XP? I have never regretted it either. In nearly five years I haven't had a blue screen or lost a hard drive.

The main thing iv learned in all my years of using computers is dont update JUST becasue theres a newer version available. If it does the job, why bother?

U really prefer ME over XP??

I tried ME when it was beta..all the way up to final releases and gotta say i HATED it....it was so unreliable n sluggish...XP was a dream compared to ME....

    Personal opinion of course.

Get what u say about runnin beta software for em...thats always the case with M$ tho...unfortunately.

I just dont bother with Windows at all now tho - had enuff of it. Linux does everyting I need and its rock solid and security is tight as a fishes arse.

    Cant complain.

if u gonna stick with windows tho i wud def suggest a move to XP

Early versions where buggy but the final is pefect. Who can say they havent had a blue screen for years? not many. Guess its all down to what hardware your running as well, its served me so well I dont want to upgrade but its getting phased out so iv gotta.

    Aye thats true like.

Certain hardware configs are a nightmare with Windows. If you strike lucky and get a nice mix of hardware ur onto a winner

U will be supprised with XP mint - it seems a lot smoother and solid than the 9x kernel operating systems.....

Give it plenty of RAM and ur flyin....

See the 9x os' dont really like anything above 256 (maybe 512?) - they dont use it as they shud....dont really notice much speed increase.

Chuck more memory at the NT based os's tho and they love it!

    I love XP personally.

I keep it fully up to date, and run Zone Alarm, Norton AntiVirus and the trusty Google Toolbar and Adaware, and I have been virus free since i bought this pc, over three years ago....

On rare occasions I get the odd blue screen, but only on shut down, where i get some kind of "parity error warning." Like I say though, it's rare. Never crashes, it's all good.

I also love the way you can customise it, can get it looking really snazzy.

Where can you get the patches and updates from in a way that you can put them onto cd? I thought you could only download and use them straigt away from Microsoft? I could do with a CD with all the updates, will save alot of time when I fix mine (if i ever have to lol)/my mates computers!

SP2 has been getting beta'd for a while now - apparently it was causing all kinds of bother.

u can get all the patches individually, the only problem is locating them in the technet. Everytime a patch comes out it comes with like a statement from microsoft (or whatever it's called) and an incident number for the technet... they usually have the patch on it so u can download it seperately. I've got about 10-12 of the patches i think... but they're hard to find.

Again - u gotta put your trust in XP and let the auto update bit do it's thing.

linux at home. gimp. wake up and smell the coffee mr sloppy.
