Updating a map on a tomtom anyone?

My auntie has given me her tomtom so I can update it with a new map she's bought. I've managed to download and install all the updates apparently but when reading the instructions it says that any new maps will not replace the old ones and that you have to delete the old one first. It's the Uk map she's bought but the only UK map in the installed list is called "UK And Ie Plus Major Roads Of We". The update is called "Map of Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland". It seems obvious that the latter is the one I'd need to install after deleting the already installed one but since the names don't match I'm worried i might be deleting something i shouldn't be.

Has anyone else done this before? It's fucking terrible the way they've got this whole update system worked out. Not very user friendly at all.

Are you overwriting the card by putting it in a card reader or connected via cable?

I'm yet to update mine, and yesterday coming back from leicester it had a couple of hickups where it suddenly wanted me to turn right on the A1, and looking at the map had be bang in the middle of an expanse of water! Dunno if it was loss of satelite connection or what!?

Is that at Ferrybridge? If it is its because the A1 has moved and is now a Motorway in that area, if you have been down that way before you will see that the Powerstation in Ferrybridge is now on the left whereas last year it was on the right. Your tomtom wont recognise this and will tell you to turn around so you are heading for the old A1. Even if you update your tom tom it wont update that area as it hasnt been completed yet.

    What card

I've got the tomtom in its holder, connected via USB. I've sent an email to the tomtom support team but they haven't replied.

As I said though, downloading and installing the updates doesn't overwrite currently installed maps. So I need to uninstal the old one first.

Ive not studied all Tomtom models, but mine (early one tbh) has an SD memory card, and when i get round to overwriting maps, thats what i've gotta update I believe. Can back up the origional first. Infact, but guess u can via USB!

You need the original cd that came with the unit as you need to re-install the application. Connect the tom tom unit to your PC. Then go into windows explorer and you will see the tom tom as another drive. Right click on it and format it. Once you have done this place the original cd in and follow the on-screen instructions until you have re-installed the application but do not try to install the maps on this CD. Once the application has finished insert the new cd with the new maps and then follow the onscreen instructions again. Only install the great britain map and the original card that is in the unit will not take anymore info than that. Oh and dont try to install the plus version either, just install the normal great britain map.

If you have anymore probs visit the forum on the below link.

Well first off, there's tons of space on this tomtom. About 6 or 7 GB or something if not more. Secondly, I didn't get the new maps on cd, I have them downloaded. The instructions just say that you need to delete the original map and then install the new one., which I could easily do if only I knew if the one that I stated is the correct one to use. I have a Tomtom GO 910 or something..

Ah right you have the one with the hard drive installed. You still have to have the actual application on it to run the maps. Then is should be a case of going into windows explorer then draging and droping the new map into the folder that contains the old one, it should then overwrite it.

Like I said if this draws a blank try the website I mentioned. It's been a while since I workled there so they might be new methods.
