University - Is it a total waste of time these days????

So 10 years ago you could get a degree, then leave university and walk into a good job, get some respect for your intelligence and make enough money to buy a house within a few months...

... these days you leave university with 10-30 grands worth of debt, you get offered some shit job paying 10-20 grand if your lucky,... and you get treat like "the help". You cant afford a house nine times out of ten, and most of you end up living with your parents while you go through your first few jobs and hopefully onto some half decent salary before you can even afford to leave home.

.... OR you could go to night school and learn to be a PLUMBER / CARPENTER / ELECTRICIAN .... and within a matter of months your earning a small fortune, you have very little debt if any and actually have a practical skill in this world...

Now dont get me wrong, I was a student only 4 years ago and i FULLY SUPPORT STUDENTS (REPEAT: FULLY SUPPORT STUDENTS) but surely these days the whole thing is just turning into a huge joke where you end up in a massive amount of debt in order to earn a fraction more than your peers, and end up having to slowly grease your way up a ladder anyways...

Im earning more money these days with stuff that i learned out of 100 pounds worth of programming books than people i went to school with who worked their tits off at university and school - surely this is wrong?

I might aswell ebay my degree certificate for all its been worth eh (accountancy and financial analysis)....

Any students out there feel the same?

couldn't agree more I have a £3 education (public libraries :D) and probably earn more than the vast majority of uni leavers and my lack of degree wont have any impact on securing future employment.

I think further education as formal institution is a dated way of aquiring knowledge.

it depends what you do at uni......

my brothers 30, got a phd in marine geophysics from durham uni and he earns 18k per year....

whereas my sister is 27, did PE + sports science at loughborough and now earns 60k+ after bonuses /pension as a finance operator for hilton...

my other sisters 24, has a degree in sports and recreation from leeds met and a law conversion and earns about 19k...

i want to go into transport planning - recruitment drive for 1500 people in the next three years, starting wages of between £18 - £25k.... only snag is i will have to do a (funded) masters...

if you do a "business studies" degree you get what you ask for imo.

Depends what you want to do. Loads of jobs with companies require you to have a degree now.

Im probably gonna start a business, so its been a bit of a waste of time! :p

Its been fun tho. so its not all bad.

it all depends what you do when at uni. i left newcastle uni last year with a 2:1 but also with actual experience. the experience counts much more than the degree but the fact that i stuck at it and got a decent degree also counts for alot. although i'm not using my degree now, it's something very useful that i can fall back on.

my advice is to do something, like a brand managers job, on top of your degree.

University just seems like a dated learning technique, I know its a must if you want to become a professional (be it legal, accademic, medical, etc.) - but in such a rapidly changing modern climate most Universities can't keep up with the skillsets many industries require.

In a fast moving world, I thinka more modern approach to education is needed, both the school and university systems are very inefficiant ways of aquiring knowledge.

    i fucken hated school

i stayed on @ 6th form because i couldnt be fucked to choose a job style and worked as a skivvy for currys on the silver link part time

left 6th form with shite certificates and just grafted away in peace valeting cars for 4/5 years

then got into nissan building cars, then moved from nissan to johnsons controls next door to nissan making the micra seats

i earned about 25k last year  put in for a promoted post within the company for sum more cash, but im now considering fucking the lot of and going back to cleaning cars (be it as managing a site and not skivving about)

my mate did the same as me, from the car cleaning to the nissan and johnsonns seats thing, and now runs a car valaeting center, he was bringing 1k home per week over the winter period (after hes payed for his staff and chemicals and such)

1k a week spending money?? i know where i fucken going next

this time last year he was driving a nice clio sport with a set of wheels and working about 10 meters away from me, now hes got 14 grands worth of mitubishi evo 6 and he owns a fucken car washing center

from memory he didnt do the whole school thing either

I have no clue, but kids shouldn't hate school... Kids aren't encouraged to learn, they aren't stimulated, they're taught a lot of things that bare no real impact on the real world... The purpose of education is to provide people with a purpose, an interest - there are few schools that create this spark kids desire.

As for universities, the only universities that seem to excel are the ones that are tied in with trade (microsoft/cambridge is a good example)... I think tying educational bodies much closer with trade would be a good starting point... I also feel the process of going to university for 3-8 years is now very dated... Experience means far more in todays society as it is here you aquire the essential skills - OU systems seem far more practile and would help avoid insane debts...

The current educational system is a joke.

Depends which way you look at it and circumstances. You could say doing some courses were a waste of time etc but I wudn't swap my four years at Uni for anything. Its such an experience, you meet different people, learn to live independently and so on. Some may already have this but, for many, its the first time they've been away from home. Its what you make of it that counts, and I had so much fun and enjoyed almost every minute.

Oh............I got some sort of degree too. :p
