top jock mixes i was just wondering what people though on this topic... seeing as how all these top jocks get paid shit loads of money to spin a selection of records, say about 10-15 in an average set, IMO i would expect them to make every mixe spot on i.e. no double beating etc etc etc, but i have heard a various number of dj's play at foundation and some of them, which are regarded by everyone as high class dj's, who have been in the business for a number of years, their mixing has been rather bad. a couple of examples i can think of is anne savage when she played not so long ago with lashes, most of her set was was amazing but a few mixes were crap. another was the a dj who played a prog warm up at foundation, i think it was when yves deruyter and M.I.K.E were on (who were totally amazin). i just wanted to know what other people opinions are on this matter... do you think that every mix in a set should be spot on if these dj's have been playing for years.
it probably should be....but im not that fussed if its not. as nobody can get it right alllll the time, and i think DJing is about so many more things than beat matching.
well obviousely djing isnt just about beat matching, cos if i go to see a dj i want them to have a good set selection and build their sets etc, but the point i was tryin to make was that if top dj's are gettin paid a shit load to play and they have x amount of years experience, they shuld get it right all the time and i would expect them to mix smoothly on each mix, as that is part of what we are paying them to do.
Do you get everything right when your at work? The point is everybody is human and makes mistakes. I agree everyone likes good mixing, but just because a DJ may miss a few mixes during a night it isnt going to ruin the set for me.
yeah i agree with you there Revel, it is easier said then done. but was just sayin that if u do something for a living day in and day out, seamles mixing should come naturally to a top dj all the time.
yes everybody is human and yes people do make mistakes, and yeah it doesnt really ruin a set for me either, but its just top dj's get this high class status because of their skills etc. if they have this status then their performances should reflect their reputations and on the vast majority of cases it does. its justs if we are payin their wages to see who we think are good dj's we should expect them to pull of every mix.
l agree with your argument in parts, but a DJ doesnt have to be technically flawless to be successfull. They should obviously be able to mix to a high standard, but its all about the atmosphere and set construction/track selection. If superb mixing adds to that (eg: Sasha, Digweed etc) then all the better.
I'm surpirsed some jocks can mix at all in the states they get into. Last time jon carter played he looked smashed as anything yet only fucked up once.
Depends on how ambitious people are with their mixing. If DJs limit themselves to playing tunes which are easy to mix ie have basic 4 beats at the start and end then they should get them spot on. However the best DJs play across styles which are much harder to mix.
this is a good thread i think djs mixing should be of a high standard almost all the time going off the money they make, obviously everyone makes small mistakes but some of the examples ive seen by so called top djs have been a joke, sometimes they just look uninterested or off their faces, and some have got their status due to production and started djing afterwards so arent at the standard that everyone expects
i get really frustrated if i pay my money to see a top jock and his set is poor. it makes me very angry when they come across as money grabbing bastards who take the piss when it comes to what they do on the decks and the demands that they make when they are not. i've had the misfortune to play alongside a couple of these. but then when you get a top jock who is so into his music and is very friendly and takes the time to have a chat with you then its wicked and they're worth every penny.
This relates back to the Jeff Mills 'shit mixing' thread. I totally agree that the top jocks should be getting it right every time - even when they do get it wrong they should have the ability to cover it up so nobody actually realises. I reckon the clarity on the Foundation soundsystem is really low, so if people are recognising bad mixes in there, that doesnt say much for the DJ at all. Most, if not all DJs on this board have other things goin on in their life apart from DJing (jobs, uni etc) ie they cannot dedicate all of their time to learning to mix. However, pro jocks are getting paid to DJ and they could if they wanted dedicate all of their time to mixing. Plus they have the best equipment available, play on the best soundsystems etc etc so there really is no excuse.
i often go to clubs without having a drink, you wouldnt believe some of the shocking mixing that you hear when you are sober.
