If you don't have a shonky criminal record and don't live in rented accommodation, apply for a F.A.C, granted there a lot harder to obtain these days(i have held my for over 10 years ).
If an FAC is no go, move down the Air Rifle route, but not CO2, go for the old fashioned 'break barrle' type, easier to maintain and more reliable, .177 for feather and .22 for fur.
Crossbow/compound bows are a viable alternative.

Iv got a Air Rilfe and that could feed you well but really you need to be bringing down sheep and dear after a while. I have land and can apply for FAC but i am also in a position where i cant apply for one just yet *snigger*
